The meeting was attended by representatives of the Central Bank of Iraq and the Association of Private Banks and a number of general managers in the ministry, to discuss and study ways to develop Mutanabi Street and rehabilitation on the levels of climate, aesthetic and service, and to identify the details of obstacles and develop appropriate solutions.

He also proposed "to use the wali's house opposite Al Qashleh building and transform it as a center for entrepreneurship that embraces youth projects in all disciplines."

No. There will be 2 different currencies, they will hand in 25K of IQD and get 25 dinar in another currency, possibly IQR.

Dual pricing will come into effect and goods will be priced in both IQD and the new currency. There was a redenomination in the UK in 1971 and I can assure you it is extremely problematic, particularly for the elderly.

Accounting regulations do not allow it. Some years ago Iraq had to get permission from the IMF to revalue assets acquired during the Saddam era. Depreciation is a different matter altogether.

You are looking at it the wrong way round, 600/USD is not 6 times 100/USD, it is a sixth, parity would be 1/USD. A realistic rate of appreciation would take a generation to reach parity.

In the currency markets a couple of percent is a huge move, what Kap is suggesting is outside the realms of possibility.

A float is not out of the question but may not go the way expected, Egypt lost 50% of the value overnight.

Whitelions   sandyf the article clearly states that its a study and they do not recommend an rv BUT it has no bareing on what the CBI will do very soon .

xyz   Tebow 9-9-2019 Newshound Guru Kaperoni ...dinar rates...in excess of $3...not possible. Iraq could never afford any such RV/RI. The only scenario where I could see such a thing is if they LOP first. I've already stated I don't believe that Iraq would LOP.

That being said, the only thing they can do is raise the value gradually over time as I've discussed many times via a float.  

The reason why I say they will float is 1, the IMF specifically gave such a directive, 2 Iraq can't afford any other increase in value with so much currency in circulation, 3 have to reduce the currency which can't occur until after the value starts to rise.

So we'll just have to wait and see how the next several months play out. But I know one thing if they're going to raise the value it's going to have to occur gradually...

But that's not the truth, the truth is they were not ready to float at that time and proper translation of the article was necessary because all countries float eventually especially Emerging Markets. And there have been many examples of countries moving from fixed to float over the last few years. Even several in the Middle East

The Committee's Rapporteur Ahmed al-Saffar told the Iraqi News Agency "conscious": "The proposal to delete the zeros has been raised from the House of Representatives to the Parliamentary Finance Committee in order to study the change of the national currency and all categories and the printing of new currencies, but the preliminary study showed that the costs needed by the project big".

He added that "the budget deficit for this year and Iraq's debt is one of the most important reasons that will lead to delay the deletion of zeros (three zeros)," noting that "the Finance Committee has assigned specialized bodies of monetary policy to study the project carefully to submit to the Finance Committee to be the main lines of this project, which Its beginnings go back years. "

Al-Saffar pointed out that "deleting the zeros is a project that has more psychological effects than actual ones.

Loren   I met a lot of Iraqi's on base and at the Consulates. The 1st thing that really surprised was the numbers of them that spoke English and where able to write it. Although without those skills they would be allowed on base, but there was never any shortage Iraqi's with those skills.

the reason that I point this out is because the Iraqi's that I met were highly educated and it would be hard to pull the wool over their eyes.. Evidence of that would be the demonstrations in the streets of Baghdad by the Graduates from Iraqi Universities demanding jobs.

I have known Iranians over the years and they say that the cleric controls them and stops any progress in joining the rest of the world's ecomy. I believe that this what we are seeing in Iraq right now.

Loren   Everything I have been told by Iraqi's & Iranians says, that the cleric is interested in maintaining their position of power and not much more than that.

Loren   The average age of Iraqi's is around 35, it is also a majority of young people in Iran. They are ready to join the 21st century, the cleric stands in the way of that.

Loren   I have been all over Iraq, we think of the desert as what we see in AZ and N.M. this not the case. Everything is dry and dead, even getting clean drinking water can be a major problem.

Loren   The difference between Kuwait and Iraq is startling. While there in the rural areas they where selling fuel out of 5 gallon cans side of the road, food the same way. This why they are trying to encourage foreign investment to come in.

Loren   Think about Sadam did, he diverted the river from Southern Iraq so that it would go around his Palace. Leaving hundreds of miles of irrigation systems dry and useless.

I have talked Kuwaiti farmers that say if Iraq starts farming again that they would not be to compete with them. Iraq has many sources of income, the touristy is one of them You would not believe biblical history that is there, that the articlogists can't wait to get access to.

A example of what I am talking about is Egypt, their major source income is tourism. So when I hear that Iraq can not sustain a RV, I say that they can not afford not to.

You should hear the call to prayer that takes place everyday that can even be heard when you are inside. Believe me you do not even want to hear how women are treated over there.

Ssandyf   If the IQD was to float from the current value and appreciate at 10 percent per month, in 2 years the rate would be about 100/USD, at 3 percent per month the rate would be about 600/USD.

No economy could withstand those levels for any length of time, I think the largest recorded was China at 7% in a year. Normal appreciation is in fractions of a percent.
