Iraq to remove three zeros from the dinar

The Iraqi Central Bank announced the completion of a plan to remove three zeros from the dinar, replacing current banknotes with new ones.
The Bank will re-print 30 trillion dinars According to Mazhar Mohammad Saleh, an expert in the Iraqi Central Bank, in a speech with the ALHAYAT of London, “our problem lies in the timing of the currency exchange, as we need to select a suitable time for implementing the project without obstacles.”
The Central Bank planned to remove three zeros from the Iraqi dinar, after suffering from inflation and the decline of the currency during the nineties, due to economic sanctions. The value of the dinar decreased internationally to its current value of approximately 1120 dinars per dollar.
In 2003, the Central Bank adopted a new mechanism to maintain the dinar’s exchange rate. It created a foreign exchange auction to sell dollars that Iraq obtained from the sale of oil in the global markets and then transferred to the bank to sell in local currency, which helped raise the value of the dinar over the last few years to more than 2000 points.
Saleh estimated the government will exchange more than 30 trillion Iraqi dinars, or more than $26 billion dollars. The most important change after deleting the zeros, is to reduce the number of banknotes in circulation, simplifying the payment system in Iraq.
Some economists have warned that the process of exchanging the Iraqi currency will be rife with corruption due to the inaccurate structuring of Iraqi banks. Previous attempts to exchange the currency resulted in major corruption, costly to the Iraqi economy. However, Saleh responds that the process of changing the currency in 2004, occurred under the exceptional circumstance of an occupation, was managed by a civil American governor, and was still successful.
The Central Bank sells, through a daily auction, between $150 million dollars and $190 million dollars daily to clients of private banks and the financial companies.

As a Non American Expat one of the intriguing aspects of our study is the fascinating game of political chess that we are witnessing. Despite seeking out alternative sources of media I will admit there were times when I became narrowly focused on the Iraqi piece of the puzzle but experience and Frank’s gentle reminders has taught me to look further. There is reason for discussion on topics like the impeachment, Ukraine, Iran,etc.
The impeachment, imo, goes beyond the current spectacle. It has served as a gateway to discussion on Ukraine and deeds of former leadership. Coincidentally we are now seeing Ukrainian members of parliament demand an investigation into former ex-President Yanukovych and ties to an American Political Party and a wealthy foundation.
There is reason for isolation in Iran as it too was tied to former leadership in the US. Recent releases have coincidentally shown Iran’s ties to disruption to the middle east and once again ties to an American Political Party.
This multi-step process, imo, isn’t just about a soon to be released blessing. This game is setting up future leadership/strategy by greatly weakening an opponent. It is why I am keen to see the release of the FISA report. I truly believe the blessing will not arrive until Trump’s opponent is where his strategy intends to take them and while I’d love for the pace to pick up I must admit this is a fascinating story to behold.

ALGIERS:
Protests took place in Algiers and other cities yesterday for the 39th week in a row, as demonstrators renewed their calls for the departure of symbols of the regime of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and the fight against corruption.
They also reiterated their refusal to hold presidential elections under the existing regime, while the authorities insist on holding elections on December 12.
The Czech Republic
Hundreds of thousands of citizens took to the streets of Prague today in one of the largest anti-government protests since the fall of the communist regime, calling on Prime Minister André Papis to step down, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution.
PARIS (
Reuters) - Security forces in Paris on Sunday fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators from the "Yellow Jackets" movement opposed to President Emmanuel Macron's economic policies, a day before the first anniversary of the movement's protests that began in the country and spread its contagion to European countries.
Police stopped more than 100 protesters, and some of their marches tried to block roads linking Paris to its suburbs.
HONG KONG (
Reuters) - The island has regained relative calm after five days of mass demonstrations called "Spread Everywhere" that prompted police to warn the city was on the verge of "total collapse" as protesters vacated the Chinese university which was the scene of clashes.
Most of the closed roads were opened to traffic, but some roads and a major tunnel remained closed, and some demonstrations continued in the city.
The Chinese army announced today that it had briefly deployed its troops there to clean up the residues and barricades left by the demonstrators.
Supporters of the central government in Beijing took the opportunity to take to the streets of Hong Kong after a week of chaos, gathered in front of the government headquarters to show support for the police, waving Chinese flags and banners in support of Beijing.
Bolivia
still suffers from unrest after President Evo Morales was declared the winner of a fourth term. Although he resigned on Sunday to calm the street and move to Mexico, the country is still full of violent protests.
Five Morales supporters were killed yesterday in clashes with police and soldiers near Cochabamba. Thousands of farmers were trying to reach the city to join a mass demonstration.
Venezuela
Demonstrations returned to the streets of the country after a period of calm with the organization of the opposition led by Juan Guaido mass demonstrations to demand President Nicolas Maduro step down.
Guaidou gained new impetus after the resignation of Bolivia's Morales president, who was an ally of Maduro.
Chile
has been rallying since yesterday after political parties struck a deal in parliament to hold a referendum in April 2020 on a new constitution.
The protests are an extension of a three-week-old protest over rising metro ticket prices, then expanded to denounce social inequality, lower wages and higher education and healthcare costs.
Although the drafting of a new constitution is one of the main demands of the protesters, the protesters received the new agreement with skepticism, demanding that their living problems be resolved first.
