Francis Albert   I do a daily talk show on health and finance. And after weeks of talking to many sources I trust here's what we see re: Carona. The methodology for reporting is fatally flawed. Evidently all medical people, hospitals, doctors, clinics, military etc. have been instructed to label virtually all deaths as caused by Carona. People do what they are told. So, that's a real problem with believing any of these numbers...anywhere in the world.

Francis Albert   Secondly, the testing they claim to be using for positive is also fatally flawed. It does not test for the Carona Virus, it tests for proteins in the immune system that are elevated. Which is what the body does for a living to keep us alive. So, the positive testing thing is flawed.

chattels   Oil prices have collapsed due to a dispute between Russia and Saudi Arabia and the drop in demand due to the coronavirus. That will devastate Iraq which is the most oil dependent country in the world. Around 90% of its revenue comes from its petroleum sales.

This couldn’t come at a worse time as the government is paralyzed because it has been unable to pick a new prime minister. Even if that wasn’t happening Baghdad has never planned for the ups and downs in the energy market increasing its budget every year prices stay high and then falling into debt and deficits when they collapse. The value of petroleum is so low however that it threatens the very state itself.

chattels   Ali Allaq the head of the Central Bank didn’t seem to think things were that bad. He didn’t expect oil prices to stay low for long and said that the government could cut subsidies and services to cover the debt and salaries.

chattels   Iraq’s stated policy decisions so far are another example of unpreparedness. Baghdad said it would cut oil prices and increase its exports to boost sales. With the coronavirus world demand for petroleum is way down so there is no way it could boost its sales to earn enough to cover its basic costs. Cutting its crude prices are just as unrealistic with prices plummeting.

 chattels   Iraq’s elite have never taken the country’s oil dependency as an issue. Instead it has looked towards its petroleum wealth as a way to maintain its position and enrich itself.

Now that the world economy is facing a recession and oil prices have sunken so low they are starring into the abyss. The government is completely unqualified for the possible repercussions.

It will have to implement drastic austerity measures which will cut into the ruling parties’ patronage systems making it reluctant to do so. It will not be able to borrow that much, which means it will likely have to raid its foreign reserves to pay for things, and carry out massive deficit spending.

Iraq has suffered oil declines before, and its main response is simply to wait them out and then go back to business as usual. This time maybe different because the energy market has gone down so low the state may not be able to sustain itself which could lead to a new round of protests and more unforeseen consequences.

Dave   The Federal Reserve said Thursday it will extend its currency exchange program to other central banks around the world as the demand for dollars intensifies.

In addition to its existing arrangements with its larger peers, the Fed is now extending the lines to Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Korea, Mexico, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore and Sweden. The lines are known as dollar swaps and will be in place for six months.

The Fed will provide $60 billion to all but Denmark, Norway and New Zealand, which will get $30 billion.

Reserve Bank of Australia, the Banco Central do Brasil, the Bank of Korea, the Banco de Mexico, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and the Sveriges Riksbank and $30 billion each for the Danmarks Nationalbank, the Norges Bank, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the currency against a basket of its global competitors, has risen to a record high amid widespread selling of assets.

"These facilities, like those already established between the Federal Reserve and other central banks, are designed to help lessen strains in global U.S. dollar funding markets, thereby mitigating the effects of these strains on the supply of credit to households and businesses, both domestically and abroad," the Fed said in a news release posted on its site.

The Fed has standing arrangements with the Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the European Central Bank, and the Swiss National Bank.

Plans are useless unless circumstances allow implementation. In 2006 the CBI planned to redenominate the IQD but circumstances took over and it never happened.

In the same way conditions have never been right for a successful flotation, and even more so in the current financial climate. You may be half right in that a forced flotation could occur with a resulting devaluation, time to face reality and put the benefits of your "effect" to bed.

The IQD is not going to increase in value for a long time to come as a result of any action taken by Iraq.

On the other hand, it appears that the Kurds are willing to give him a chance. Zurfi has an advantage over his predecessor Mohammed Allawi who was an independent. You can refer to all the "effects" and "plans" you want but they will do little to improve Iraq's financial position before the axe falls. Rather than promoting the unachievable it is time to face reality, there is every chance that the IMF will do the same to Iraq as they did to Egypt.

In exchange for financial assistance Iraq could be forced into an almost immediate flotation creating a significant devaluation. The reality of today is low oil prices and a financial disaster for oil producing countries, in particular those already in financial trouble like Iraq. The IQD could very well return to the level set in Oct 2003.

No I haven't, I have referenced documented facts that show countries that have floated the currency under similar financial circumstances as Iraq have faced devaluation, but feel free to think that is wrong.

Including Middle East countries like Tunisia, Egypt etc. But i dont make up stories or draw conclusions, i find facts. And the fact is the IMF directly told the CBI this during the IMF Article IV consultation in 2013/14..

Kaperoni   14. The de facto fixed exchange rate has served Iraq well. The authorities agreed that a stable nominal exchange rate provides a valuable anchor for inflation expectations in an uncertain environment, and intend to continue implementing this policy for the foreseeable future.

In the medium term, staff encouraged the authorities to consider creating the conditions which would make possible a move to a more flexible exchange rate policy.

Such flexibility could allow a predictable and gradual appreciation of the nominal exchange rate, triggered by strong oil revenues and the Balassa-Samuelson effect, to accommodate a possible real exchange rate appreciation while keeping domestic inflation low.”

Kaperoni   Now what does that mean?

Kaperoni   The IMF recommends that the CBI start.. “creating the conditions which would make possible a move to a more flexible exchange rate policy" (float).

This would prepare them for a more “predictable and gradual appreciation of the nominal exchange rate.”

It would occur (triggered) by strong oil revenues and “Balassa-Samuelson effect” hypothesis.

So what is the Balassa-Samuelson effect hypothesis?

We will get into this…as this little nugget is very important to us as dinar investors.

We already know the plan is to float dinar based on the IMF statement above (gradual appreciation).

Kaperoni   When you search Wikipedia, you get an explanation for this as…”Balassa–Samuelson (BS) hypothesis implies that countries with rapidly expanding economies should tend to have more rapidly appreciating exchange rates.”

In other words, the IMF themselves are acknowledging (by saying Balassa–Samuelson effect in this Article IV document) the dinar will rise rapidly.

Further research on Balassa-Samuelson effect brings us this…

“In 1964, academics Bela Balassa, a Hungarian economist, and Paul Samuelson, a Nobel-Laureate economist, independently observed that countries with higher levels of productivity growth experienced rapidly rising real wages and so appreciating real exchange rates.

Academic studies since have suggested the picture is not as simple as Mr Balassa and Mr Samuelson first thought and that many other factors can also influence the model.

However, many long term investors in emerging market currencies, for example, have been able to benefit from the appreciation of those currencies which is arguably due to the Balassa-Samuelson effect.”

The key here is the last sentence… “many long term investors in emerging market currencies, for example, have been able to benefit from the appreciation of those currencies which is arguably due to the Balassa-Samuelson effect.”

Kaperoni   In other words, this reference to the “Balassa-Samuelson effect” hypothesis which in essence is described as “a rapidly expanding economy creates a rapidly appreciating exchange rate” will give us an opportunity to benefit from that appreciation.

That can only mean free float. The word “rapid” only make sense in a free float. It also means the IMF knows and endorses the plan. It also means that the dinar we hold is legitimate and was sold with an intended purpose.

Kaperoni   Go back to the Strategic Framework Agreement/TIFA we learned above that it cannot go into force until Iraq (the CBI) has “freedom of movement” of capital.

Which is clearly defined as acceptance of IMF Article VIII. When we review the documents from Iraq and US, they both confirm the intention is to enter this agreement “into force” before the end of the year.

In other words, the US Gov expect the Dinar to be internationally convertible before the end of 2013. Of course that is subject whether or not Iraq can achieve this goal.

Kaperoni   Obviously nothing is happened and this was put out with the intention of 2013/14. There have been many setbacks with monetary policy over the years including Shabibi kicked out, 3 other gov of the CBI, worn-out dinar, stability issues and meeting IMF guidelines etc and Iraq is not anywhere close to being ready at this time either.

They have work to do. They need to form the government, get stability, passed the laws and create the conditions so investors want to come and create a private sector and invest. But this does lay out the plan.
