Economic Communication: The Electoral Process Witnessed A Remarkable Technical And Procedural Improvement
Saturday 20 November 2021 166 Baghdad: Omar Abdul Latif The Iraqi Economic Contact Group demanded a solution to the election results crisis, stressing that the reports of independent observers indicated that the electoral process had witnessed a remarkable technical and procedural improvement compared to the previous elections in Iraq.
The Iraqi Economic Contact Group, launched in 2020 in London, is an international financial alliance to support Iraq, comprising the G7 countries "America, Britain, Japan, France, Germany, Canada and Italy, as well as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and from Iraq it includes the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Iraq and the Finance Committee Parliament".
A statement issued by the group stated that it calls on all parties to resolve any disputes related to the elections that may arise peacefully through the existing legal channels, expressing its hope for the rapid formation of a government that maintains the priority of economic reform, and addresses the structural challenges facing Iraq.
The group warned of the heavy dependence on oil exports despite the recovery in prices and the increase in revenues, because it is not sustainable in the long term with the decline in global demand for hydrocarbons.
She added that economic reform, as stated in the government's white paper, is required to ensure diversified and inclusive growth, create sustainable job opportunities for the growing youth group, enable the private sector to thrive and serve the economy, and ensure macroeconomic and financial sustainability in response to external shocks. She stressed the need to implement these basic reforms along with policies in the interest of human capital development, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and providing basic services.
The group also called on the leaders of Iraq and the future government to give priority to reforms and to ensure the speedy implementation of the reform process, noting that the Iraqi government's white paper continues to be an important tool in continuing to achieve those reform goals. LINK
