Signs Of A "Bad" Relationship Between Iraq And UNESCO

Monday 20 December 2021  230   Baghdad: Omar Abdul Latif

Signs of a "bad" relationship between Iraq and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization "UNESCO" are looming on the horizon, and may lead to the withdrawal of Iraqi sites that were previously inscribed on the World Heritage List.

The Ministry of Environment, through the Director of the Marshes Department and the Sustainable Management of Natural Ecosystems, Dr. Najla Al-Waeli, warned against withdrawing the Al-Hawizeh Marsh site from the World Heritage List, after it was included in 2016 with three other marshes, and the archaeological areas nearby.

Al-Waeli added in an interview with Al-Sabah, that "this decision is due to the drought that affected the Al-Hawizeh Marsh due to the lack of water as a result of cutting off nutrients from it, while we want the lowest water level that can preserve the biological diversity in it."

And she indicated that "Iraq cannot join international conventions and then abandon them after that, as it has projects funded by international organizations after those areas entered the World Heritage List," noting "the need for a solution after the climate change that Iraq suffers from, including The southern regions and the marshes, by finding alternatives to the water that reaches them, as there is a village north of Hawr al-Hawiza, we can invest sewage in it by entering it in two stages of filtration and then pushing it into the marshes.”

In addition, the environmental expert, Ahmed Saleh Nehme, admitted that “Iraq is on the cusp of a (bad) relationship with (UNESCO) after the recent warnings and notifications sent to it.”

Nima told Al-Sabah: "Iraq lost large areas of land due to lack of water, in addition to the fact that the central marshes in Maysan Governorate (Al-Awda, Al-Battat, Al-Sahin, Al-Sikl, Al-Khums) completely dried up 9 months ago."

He added that "what is left of the marshes is al-Hawizeh, which Iraq committed itself to providing the minimum amount of water for it after its entry into the World Heritage List, but what it reaches at the present time is less than 12 cubic meters per second," and stressed that "Iraq wastes large amounts of water. Water goes to the sea, and billions have been spent on many projects without implementing a single project to conserve or desalinate that water, as happens in the Gulf states.”

The environmental expert warned that "the (UNESCO) signals towards Iraq may not be good after the warnings and notifications recently sent to it to preserve the areas that were included on the international list as nature reserves."   LINK
