UN: Impunity Creates Environment Of Fear And Intimidation In Iraq

Posted On2022-06-02 By Sotaliraq   On Thursday, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) stressed that the failure to hold those involved in the killing of demonstrators and civilian activists to account creates an environment of fear and intimidation for freedom of opinion.

In a report published by Agence France-Presse, UNAMI and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that "impunity creates an environment of fear and intimidation that limits freedom of expression."

Although the report referred to “payment of compensation to the families of most of the victims who were killed during the demonstrations” that swept the country in 2019, it documented 26 incidents committed by “unidentified gunmen” with the aim of “suppressing opposition and criticism,” between the beginning of May 2021 and the end of April 2022.

The report documents 27 individual interviews and meetings with the judicial authority in the capital, Baghdad and southern governorates, which are “three murder attempts, five violent attacks, a house raid, 14 attacks with explosive devices, one kidnapping attack, an incident of property destruction, and many non-violent threats.”

The report indicated in particular that “unidentified gunmen were shot dead” in May 2021, a prominent activist in Karbala and a coordinator of the demonstrations.

He pointed to the assassination of political analyst Hisham al-Hashemi, in front of his house, on July 6 last in Baghdad, and the report stated that the trial was repeatedly postponed, due to "the inability to bring the accused to court."

The United Nations expressed concern that “judges, investigative officers and activists demanding accountability have been threatened, intimidated or violently attacked by persons believed to be associated with or supporting armed elements.”

The report noted that while “most crimes are carried out anonymously, the information indicates that detainees and convicts may belong to well-known armed groups operating outside the control of the state.”

It is noteworthy that in October 2019, Iraq witnessed an unprecedented wave of demonstrations, which swept the capital and most of the south of the country, during which protesters demanded a change of regime, but the movement was subjected to a bloody repression that killed more than 600 people and wounded at least 30,000.

The government headed by Mustafa Al-Kazemi, which assumed responsibility in May 2020, pledged to prosecute those involved in the killing of protesters and activists.

However, "the Iraqi authorities have taken limited steps to investigate the unlawful killing and wounding of protesters, critics, and activists," according to the report.   LINK

Oil Prices Stabilize After The Decision To Increase Production

Economie| 01:26 - 03/06/2022  Follow-up - Mawazine News, there was little change in oil prices today, Friday, and clung to the gains made in the previous session due to doubts that oil producers in the OPEC + alliance can increase crude production enough to compensate for the lack of Russian oil supplies.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures prices rose one cent to $116.88 a barrel, while Brent crude futures rose seven cents to $117.68 a barrel, according to "Reuters".

The OPEC + bloc, which includes the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and independent oil producers, including Russia, decided to increase production by 648,000 barrels per day in July and August, instead of 432,000 barrels per day, according to a previous agreement.

And government data revealed yesterday, Thursday, that US crude stocks fell more than expected in the week ending May 27, and fuel stocks fell, defying expectations of an increase.

According to "Reuters", Russia's oil production is currently about one million barrels per day less than its quota specified in the OPEC + agreement.

And the newspaper "The Wall Street Journal" reported on Tuesday, quoting delegates in OPEC, that members of the organization are discussing the idea of suspending Russia's participation in the agreement while harming Western sanctions.    https://www.mawazin.net/Details.aspx?jimare=195333
