butterfly   A Superpower Submits A Proposal To Ban Cryptocurrencies

Economic Last Update 01/20/2022 | 5:09 PM  The Russian Central Bank, the third largest cryptocurrency country in the world, has proposed a blanket ban on the use and mining of all cryptocurrencies domestically.

The Central Bank said in a report published today, Thursday, that cryptocurrencies bear the hallmarks of a pyramid scheme, and undermine the sovereignty of monetary policy, which poses a threat to the Russian financial system.

The report stated that the potential financial stability risks associated with cryptocurrencies are much higher for emerging markets, including in Russia, due to increased propensity to save in foreign currency with an insufficient level of financial literacy, quoting Bloomberg.

The bank explained that mining harms the country's green agenda, threatens Russia's energy supply and amplifies the negative effects of the proliferation of cryptocurrencies, creating incentives to circumvent attempts at regulation.

Two well-informed sources said the central bank's tough stance against cryptocurrencies is in line with that of Russia's powerful security services, which also support banning cryptocurrencies domestically to prevent them from being used to fund opposition in the country.

Russia is home to a thriving mining industry, which has become an increasingly important hub after China described cryptocurrency-related transactions as illicit financial activity and vowed to root out digital asset mining.

Russia became the world's third largest cryptocurrency mining country last year, according to Cambridge University data.

The largest crypto mines are located in the north of the country and in Siberia, where temperatures are low and there is potential for cheap energy.

Russia already bans the use of digital currencies to make payments, but lawmakers have acknowledged the presence of digital currencies in the 2020 law as their popularity grows.

butterfly   Unlike in China, the ban will not apply to assets held by Russians abroad, and those with offshore bank accounts will be able to trade cryptocurrency. https://almaalomah.me/2022/01/20/577736/

butterfly   Sweden Renews Support for De-Mining in Iraq ............ 21st January 2022 in Security .............. The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) welcomes the contribution of SEK 50 million (approximately USD 5.7 million) from the Government of Sweden, which will support the Government of Iraq with humanitarian, socio-economic, and reconstruction efforts while protecting vulnerable civilians from the threat posed by explosive ordnance.

Due to successive conflicts in Iraq from 1980 until 2017, as well as the most recent conflict waged by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Iraq is one of the world's most explosive ordnance-contaminated countries, with approximately 2,850 square kilometers of recorded contaminated areas.

The financial contribution from the Government of Sweden will bolster the efforts of UNMAS to support capacity development for a nationally led and implemented explosive ordnance response.

The Swedish contribution will support clearance of explosive ordnance in the liberated areas and southern Iraq and will further support explosive ordnance risk education efforts to protect civilians, with messages and means tailored to reach women and children, as well as internally displaced person (IDPs) and vulnerable communities.

The implementation of the project, which began in December 2021 and will run for 24 months, will assist UNMAS to support the national mine action authorities through technical advice and training for effective management, regulation and coordination of mine action sector. Furthermore, it will build sustainable capacity of the national operators to independently deliver mine action activities.

butterfly   His Excellency Mr. Jonas Loven, Ambassador of Sweden to Iraq, said:

"Explosive ordnances continue to pose a serious threat to civilians all through Iraq. The widespread contamination is an obstacle for returns and access to basic social services that will require mine action for years to come. Sweden has had a long relationship with UNMAS Iraq and is proud to continue supporting their work including the increased focus on national capacity strengthening during this phase."

Pehr Lodhammar, Chief Mine Action Programme of UNMAS in Iraq, commented:

"With this generous contribution, Sweden has supported UNMAS activities in Iraq with more than USD 14 million since 2018. The Swedish support will greatly contribute to durable solutions by facilitating the safe return of IDPs to their places of origin, and enabling access to communities in need for humanitarian assistance."

butterfly   US shifting towards diplomacy in Iraq when dealing with Iran, experts say

Washington taking softer approach when dealing with Iranian meddling in Iraq and the wider region Jan 21, 2022 ................................... US-Iraqi relations have taken a more diplomatic path under President Joe Biden’s administration in comparison to the Donald Trump era, experts have told The National.

Mr Biden was inaugurated a year ago and has shifted Washington’s policy by taking a softer approach when dealing with Iranian meddling in Iraq and the wider region.

“The Biden administration has a completely different view of Iraq and the region than the Trump administration,” said Renad Mansour, director of the Iraq initiative at London’s Chatham House.

“The Trump administration's legacy in Iraq will be centred around the very maximal policy against Iran in Iraq.”

Under Mr Trump, who served one term as US president between 2016 and 2021, Iraq was used as a “battle on the ground” for Washington’s conflict with Iran, Mr Mansour said. UNEEK   Some interesting Tid Bits for today while we "wait":

UNEEK   Gabby Gingras was born unable to feel pain. She has a full sense of touch. But a rare genetic condition left her completely unable to sense physical pain.

You might think this is a superpower, or an incredible gift. But her life is dreadful. The inability to feel pain left Gabby unable to distinguish right from wrong in the physical world. One profile summarized a fraction of it:

As Gabby’s baby teeth came in, she mutilated the inside of her mouth. Gabby was unaware of the damage she was causing because she didn’t feel the pain that would tell her to stop. Her parents watch helplessly.

“She would chew her fingers bloody, she would chew on her tongue like it was bubble gum,” Steve Gingras, Gabby’s father, explained. “She ended up in the hospital for 10 days because her tongue was so swelled up she couldn’t drink.”

Pain also keeps babies from putting their fingers in their eyes. Without pain to stop her, Gabby scratched her eyes so badly doctors temporarily sewed them shut. Today she is legally blind because of self-inflicted childhood injuries.

Pain is miserable. Life without pain is a disaster.

UNEEK   John Maynard Keynes once purchased a trove of Issac Newton’s original papers at auction. Many had never been seen before, having been stashed away at Cambridge for centuries.

Newton is probably the smartest human to ever live. But Keynes was astonished to find that much of the work was devoted to alchemy, sorcery, and trying to find a potion for eternal life.

Keynes wrote:

I have glanced through a great quantity of this at least 100,000 words, I should say. It is utterly impossible to deny that it is wholly magical and wholly devoid of scientific value; and also impossible not to admit that Newton devoted years of work to it.

I wonder: Was Newton a genius in spite of being addicted to magic, or was being curious about things that seemed impossible part of what made him so successful?

UNEEK   Michael Lewis published his first book, Liar’s Poker, in 1989. It was a huge hit. But his next book didn’t come for another decade. He later explained his hiatuses and why he fills his time with hobbies:

Writers can get in this mindset where they feel they have to write another book … the publisher’s on you afterwards and they’re ready to get you going again. And I just always feel that the book is going to be better if I start all over again, start completely fresh as if I’ve never written a book before and give myself at least the option of not writing books.

The best ideas happen when you wait patiently for them to come, which isn’t something you or your boss can schedule.

EYEGUY   do you think they are now waiting to see what happens with Ukraine?
