Tishwash: Iraq: Activists gather for new demonstrations

Iraqi activists in Baghdad, Dhi Qar and Babil said today, Friday, that they began mobilizing to organize new demonstrations, the dates of which have not been set yet, to demand the settlement of electoral benefits and the formation of a new government that can face the waves of high prices and unemployment, while emphasizing the demands of the first demonstrations that erupted in the last quarter. And last week, the civil activist, Dergham Majid, was attacked by security personnel affiliated with a member of parliament from the Sadrist movement led by Muqtada al-Sadr, and he was seriously wounded.

After the incident, Majed threatened to move again to mobilize to peacefully demonstrate in front of the Iraqi parliament to reject the mechanism for distributing positions between influential parties, in addition to political conflicts over the way to choose the President of the Republic.

For his part, the activist from Najaf Governorate, Ali Al-Hujaimi, stated that "the demonstration coordinators in the cities of southern Iraq are currently working on organizing unified demonstrations in Baghdad," explaining, to "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed", that "Babylon may be the nucleus of the beginning of the protests, considering that" The popular movement was subjected to great cruelty by the security forces, but it is necessary to move towards renewing the demands called for by the October demonstrations, for which hundreds of victims fell.

For his part, activist and member of the Iraqi Communist Party, Ayham Rashad, suggested that popular demonstrations will return in the coming months, specifically after July, and the electricity and water shortages that are accompanied each year.

He confirmed to "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" that "the protesters in Baghdad have received notifications about the demonstrations that may start next week, but so far, the exact date or place of the start of the protests has not been determined."

And the independent deputy in the Iraqi parliament, Hadi Al-Salami, believes that "the call for new demonstrations is a natural and expected thing, especially with the authorities, influential parties and armed factions continuing to practice aggressiveness with the rebellious youth in order to reform the situation in the country."

And he continues his conversation with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, that "independent deputies will be supportive of any social or protest movement that rejects the forces of arms."

The Iraqi demonstrations erupted on October 1, 2019, after calls were launched on social media following the deterioration of services and the exacerbation of the unemployment rate, before it exploded widely in Baghdad and the cities of southern and central Iraq. 

The demonstrations witnessed unprecedented violence, especially after armed groups, described as "the third party", entered the line of killing, suppressing and kidnapping protesters and activists. The violence led to the killing of about 800 demonstrators and the injury of more than 27 thousand, at a time when no party involved in these acts was held accountable  link

US Central Command: The Baghdad government wants US forces to stay in Iraq

The commander of the US Central Command "Centcom", General Kenneth McKenzie, said that he does not know how long his country's soldiers will remain in Syria, and that this depends on decision-makers in Washington.
