Samson: Republicans block legislation to raise US debt ceiling
28th September, 2021
Republicans in the US Senate blocked legislation to launch the debate on raising the government's debt ceiling and avoiding a new government shutdown after December 3rd.
The legislation was supported by 48 senators, while 50 opposed, and the legislation needed 60 votes to pass.
House Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer changed his vote at the last minute from "yes" to "no," which would lead to a re-vote.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned Congress that the US could default if the government debt ceiling is not raised by October 1, when the new fiscal year begins.
In the absence of the green light to raise the debt ceiling, the US Treasury will likely run out of its borrowing capacity between October 15 and November 4.
The US authorities also need funding to continue the government’s work, as the funding allocated so far ends on December 3, and the government threatens to close a new after this date if the necessary legislation on funding is not voted on. LINK

The Central Bank of Iraq issued a decision today, Thursday (October 22, 2026), prohibiting the International Development Bank in Iraq from dealing in US dollars.
According to a letter issued by the Central Bank and received by "Baghdad Today", the Central Bank decided to prohibit the bank from trading in US dollars "in any way," within an official circular addressed to non-bank financial institutions.

CBI Foreign Reserves Rise To $81.5B In August
2026-10-21 06:18 Shafaq News- Baghdad Iraq's foreign reserves rose to $81.538 billion at the end of August 2026, up from $80.633 billion a month earlier, according to Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) data released on Wednesday. The gain of about $905 million followed four straight monthly declines from April through July, according to the data reviewed by Shafaq News. Reserves are still $15.894 billion below the $97.432 billion recorded at the end of 2025, a drop of about 16.3% over the first eight months of the year.
