Iraq Signs A Huge Oil Contract With France
Posted On 2021-09-04 By Sotaliraq Iraq signs a huge contract with France in the field of oil - urgent
French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Iraq and his close relationship with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi began to bear fruit on the bilateral level, with Total Energy signing a contract with the Iraqi government with an investment of about $ 5 billion next Sunday in the presence of Al-Kazemi himself and the Ministers of Finance Ali Abdul Amir Allawi and Oil Ihsan Ismail
The President of Total Energy, Patrick Boyani, will sign an investment contract with the Iraqi Minister of Oil in the Ratawi field in the Basra governorate, where the French company will increase the production of the oil field from 60,000 barrels per day to 200,000 barrels per day, and the production of associated gas from three oil fields, from Including Majnoon, West Qarna 2, seawater pumping, and a 1,000 megawatt solar energy project.
Total is currently working in a small Iraqi field, Halfaya, in which it has a 22% share of the investment, along with the Chinese company PetroChina. It is worth noting that Total had signed the initial agreement with the Iraqi government in March. Total has a small production in Kurdistan.
The importance of this contract, which began to be negotiated in March, is that it returns Total to Iraq strongly, while the American and British companies are leaving it for reasons related to security and the conditions provided by the Iraqi government for these contracts.
The other importance is that this contract leads to Iraq's independence from importing Iranian gas, which has previously witnessed a significant decrease in its supplies, on the pretext that Baghdad has not paid its debts to Iran. As a result of this reduction in Iranian gas supplies to Iraq, the country lost a large part of its electric power.
It is remarkable that Total appointed a young French-Iraqi, Donia Shalaby, to manage Total in Iraq, and she made a significant contribution to working towards this contract. Boyani was in Baghdad during Macron's visit to Iraq. LINK
