The US Ambassador: We Are Moving To The Next Stage In Iraq By Reducing The Military Presence

Masrour Barzani Calls On The United States To Play The Role Of An Observer To Solve The Outstanding Problems Between The Region And The Federal Government

A statement issued by his media office said: "Masrour Barzani met with the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker, and the two sides discussed the current situation in the region and the latest political and economic developments in Iraq."

Barzani highlighted the ongoing discussions between the Kurdistan region and the federal government, stressing the need to ensure the rights and financial dues for the Kurdistan region in the federal budget for the next year.

The President of the Kurdistan Regional Government called on the United States to play an observer role to solve the problems between the region and the federal government.

The Integrity Committee Hosts The Directors Of The Customs And Tax Authorities To Discuss The Mechanism Of Collecting Customs Duties And Taxes

10/12/2020  On Wednesday 9/12/2020, the Integrity Committee hosted the Director General of the Customs Authority and the Director General of the Tax Authority to discuss the mechanism of collecting customs duties and taxes from currency auction sales.

During the hosting, legislative support was discussed to amend the income tax law, as well as linking ports and unifying customs fees to maximize revenues.

Ambassador Matthew Tueller visited Erbil December 9th and 10th and met with IKR political leadership, including KDP President Masoud Barzani, IKR President Nechirvan Barzani, PUK Co-Leader Bafel Talabani, KRG PM Masrour Barzani, and KRG High Council for Women’s Affairs Secretary General Dr. Khanzad Ahmed Abed.

The group discussed a range of security, political, social, and economic issues, including the U.S. commitment to partnership with KRG Ministry of Peshmerga forces and the Ministry of Peshmerga’s reform process.

The delegation praised the growing capabilities of the Iraqi Security Forces, including the Peshmerga and their joint success in the fight against ISIS, which has enabled the Global Coalition to transition to a new phase of the campaign, focused on training, equipping, and supporting the Iraqi Security Forces.

The leaders also discussed political developments in Iraq and in the IKR as well as intra-Kurdish politics. The U.S. delegation expressed support for continued dialogue between the federal Iraqi government and the KRG to resolve outstanding issues, including supporting the implementation of the Sinjar agreement.

They encouraged the IKR leaders to promote unity among Kurdish political parties to ensure greater security and stability. U.S. officials emphasized the importance of freedom of expression and the media and expressed concern over the recent violence in Sulaymaniya province.

The U.S. and IKR officials also exchanged views on the energy sector and the economy. The U.S. delegation expressed support for cooperation between the federal Iraqi government and KRG on budget and energy issues, emphasizing that coordination would aid the investment climate. U.S. companies remain interested in exploring business opportunities in the IKR and such investments would aid vital diversification of the local economy.

Before departing, the delegation also discussed the KRG’s regional action plan on women, peace, and security and expressed the two sides’ shared interest and efforts in ending gender-based violence.
