The Oil And Gas Battle Between Baghdad And The Region Is Similar To The Independence Referendum
Politician 06/01/2022 | 6:30 pm Information / translation. A report by the British Middle East Monitor newspaper confirmed, on Wednesday, that the ongoing oil and gas battle between Baghdad and the region is similar to the failed independence referendum for the region's secession from Iraq, which bears serious geopolitical repercussions on neighboring countries in Turkey and Iran.
The report, translated by the "Information" agency, stated that "the Kurdistan Democratic Party wants to secede from Baghdad and gain access to the rich European energy markets."
Such a move would be a referendum on independence except for the name which is considered complementary to the 2017 referendum, which until now remains a paper exercise.”
He added, “The Kurdistan region can be important to Europe, given its proximity, especially the issue of the Russian energy embargo.
Gas needs pipelines, so distance is a critical factor, which makes it possible for the Kurds to be a natural choice for Europeans, especially given that other suppliers are currently unreliable.”
He continued, "This gives the Kurdistan Regional Government what it needs to fill its coffers and adopt a foreign policy that focuses more on the Kurds and is independent of Baghdad.
An independent Kurdistan bordering the Kurdish populations of Turkey, Iran and Syria would, of course, have serious geopolitical ramifications.
And he indicated that “the Kurdistan Regional Government concluded contracts to sell its oil and violated the financial embargo imposed by Baghdad, and although most of the energy revenues were not disclosed to the Kurdish public and through its desperate attempt to save the financial ruin, the region broke the OPEC quota allocated to Iraq, which gives Baghdad another reason to pass Court dicision".
He explained that "the Khormala and Khor Mor fields represent the backbone of energy production in the region and its main source of income, without which the region will face internal turmoil, and according to constitutional expert Aram Haji,
Baghdad can manage these fields under the federal constitution, which makes this a potential flashpoint, which is an issue It could end with the fall of the Kurdistan Regional Government.”
The report indicated that “Bafel Talabani, the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, objects to the export of natural gas to Europe because it does not serve the people,” noting that “the region’s experience in an independent oil policy led to the Kurdistan Democratic Party becoming the richest party at the expense of the Kurdistan Regional Government forces while it suffers.”
Population from inflation, rising prices and a quarter of wages made people live in a state of turmoil.”
