Your next stimulus check: Congress to speed along $1,400 payments this week
Doug Whiteman Mon, January 25, 2021
Congress plans to take steps this week toward quickly passing President Joe Biden's coronavirus aid proposals, including a third wave of direct relief payments for most Americans. The next batch of stimulus checks would be for $1,400 — to top off the $600 payments that started going out in late December. Democrats and former President Donald Trump had wanted to provide $2,000 in that round but were thwarted by Republicans leading the Senate at that time. Now, there's a new Senate, with Biden's Democratic party in control. That could make it easier for the new checks to pass, though there are a few potential challenges.
Here's what to expect this week, plus the latest estimate on when you're likely to get more cash.
New checks given high priority
Biden has announced a wide-ranging $1.9 trillion COVID rescue package, containing the new stimulus checks. He says the recent $600 payments were "simply not enough."
"You just have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table," Biden said in a speech outlining his proposal. The first $1,200 relief payments Americans received last spring were largely spent on expenses for just getting by, including groceries and rent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has said.

YEN SURGE SHAKES THE $2.35 TRILLION CARRY TRADE: JAPAN’S CURRENCY REVERSAL COULD REPRICE GLOBAL CAPITAL FLOWS
Japan’s rapidly strengthening yen is forcing investors to reconsider one of the world’s largest funding trades, raising the possibility of broader shifts in global liquidity, asset prices and capital flows.
OVERVIEW
The yen has surged nearly 4% in about a week, reaching a seven-month high as markets increasingly expect the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates.
Cross-border yen borrowing — a proxy for the carry trade — reached a record 360 trillion yen, or approximately $2.35 trillion, in March, according to Jefferies analysis of Bank for International Settlements data.
A sustained yen rally could force investors to unwind leveraged positions and repatriate capital, potentially affecting currencies, bonds and other global assets.

CLARITY ACT HITS A CRITICAL WALL: U.S. DIGITAL-FINANCE LEADERSHIP NOW FACES A REGULATORY GAP
Congressional deadlock is putting the future of comprehensive U.S. crypto market-structure legislation in doubt just as federal regulators and other financial centers move ahead with their own digital-asset frameworks.
