butterfly   After announcing the results of the elections, Al-Fateh Alliance warns of "massive public anger" 2021-12-01 03:07   Shafaq News/ Al-Fateh Alliance, led by Hadi Al-Amiri, warned on Wednesday of "massive public anger" due to the Commission's insistence on announcing the results of the early parliamentary elections, without revealing "the fraud and manipulation operations."

The leader in the Alliance, Mahmoud Al-Hayani, told Shafaq News Agency, "The insistence on announcing the results of the early parliamentary elections, without revealing the fraud and manipulation operations, is a clear challenge to the will of the majority, as well as the popular masses who are demonstrating at the gates of the Green Zone and the rest of Iraqi cities."

He added, "the Commission's insistence on proceeding with these false results will erupt great popular anger, and for this there is a possibility that there will be escalation in the popular protest that refuses to steal the votes of the ballots."

Al-Hayali added, "These masses cannot remain silent or withdraw without achieving their demands for which blood was sacrificed."

Yesterday, a source in the Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq revealed that five candidates won in the House of Representatives, according to the results issued by the judiciary after recounting the votes manually in several polling stations.

The source told Shafaq News Agency, "There are five candidates who won based on the appeals submitted by them."

He indicated that the winners belong to the parties as follows: "a candidate for the Azm Coalition, two candidates for the Al-Fateh Alliance and two candidates for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

Earlier, IHEC released final results on Tuesday from last month's general election, confirming populist Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's movement's victory as the biggest bloc, with 73 seats in the fractious 329-seat house.

butterfly   The Takadum Party, which draws support from minority Sunni Muslims, won 37 seats. Former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law group won 33 seats, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) secured 31, according to the results cited by state media.

The results were broadly in line with preliminary figures released days after the Oct. 10 election and unlikely to alter calculations much as politicians negotiate on the makeup of a new government. Pro-Iran groups who performed poorly have refused to accept the results.

The commission said that turnout reached 44%, revised up from the 43% preliminary figure but still lower than in the last election in 2018.

The commission said that more than 9.6 million people cast their ballots in the Oct. 10 vote, where at least 167 parties and more than 3,200 candidates competed for the parliament's 329 seats.

For its part, The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) commented on the new results saying that "two seats were illegally taken from the party."

Mahmoud Muhammad, KDP's spokesperson, said that the final results of the Iraqi parliamentary elections represent clearly that "two seats were deprived for two of the Kurdistan Democratic Party candidates in the governorates of Erbil and Nineveh."

He added, "We will announce the position of Party about this illegal act after holding the meeting of the political bureau." https://www.shafaq.com/en/Iraq-News/After-announcing-the-results-of-the-elections-Al-Fateh-Alliance-warns-of-massive-public-anger

butterfly   2021-12-01 06:54   Shafaq News/ Huqooq movement, the political wing of Kata'ib Hezbollah (Iran's most powerful proxy in Iraq), voiced its rejection of the final election results announced by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), warning of plunging the country into "dark and perilous" paths.

"The election results are illegitimate given the size of manipulation and fraud the will of the voters was subject to in the 10/10 election," a statement of the movement said on Wednesday.

Huqooq said that "IHEC and the Judicial Commission [for the elections] did not look into the evidence-supported appeals it presented "subjectively and impartially."

"We were prompted to withdraw our observers before the completion of the virtual recount they were running because they were prevented from direct observation."

"IHEC's insistence upon wasting the movement's electoral entitlements by keeping the results as they are will spawn a parliament that lacks legitimacy and does not reflect the Iraqis opinion."

The movement called on the Supreme Federal Court to carefully examine the evidence the movement had presented, warning that "what happened on October 10 is a serious deviation from the democratic course we wish to our country. It threatens to plunge the country into dark and perilous pathways."

Iraq's Shiite firebrand cleric Moqtada al-Sadr was confirmed Tuesday as the biggest winner of last month's parliamentary election, that had sparked charges of voter fraud from pro-Iranian factions.

The announcement of the results had been put off for weeks amid tensions over allegations of fraud and violence, that culminated on November 7 in an assassination attempt targeting Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, from which he emerged unharmed. The attack was not claimed by any group.

Al-Sadr's movement won nearly a fifth of seats, 73 out of the assembly's total 329, IHEC said, after a lengthy manual recount of hundreds of ballot boxes.

butterfly   PMF leaders had rejected the preliminary result -- which was sharply down from their 48 seats in the outgoing assembly, as a "scam", and their supporters have held street protests chanting "No to fraud".

Their activists have staged sit-in protests outside Baghdad's ultra-secure Green Zone district, where the government, the assembly and many foreign embassies are located.

Despite the significant loss of seats, the Hashed remains a powerful force in the Iraqi political scene, backed by Iran and with a strength of 160,000 fighters.

It can also count on a key ally that made a surprise comeback in the polls, former premier Nouri al-Maliki's pro-Iran State of Law Alliance clinched 33 seats in the legislature.

Analysts have warned that, in a country still recovering from decades of war and chaos, and where most parties have armed wings, political disputes could spark a dangerous escalation.

The final results must now be sent to the federal court for ratification.

The parliament will then hold its inaugural session and elect a president, who will in turn appoint a prime minister to be approved by the legislature.

In multi-confessional and multi-ethnic Iraq, the formation of governments has involved complex negotiations ever since a US-led invasion toppled dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Posts and ministries have typically been handed out according to compromises reached by the main blocs in backroom talks, rather than to reflect the numbers of seats parties have won.

Al-Sadr, a former leader of an anti-US militia who has often surprised observers with his political manoeuvres, has called for a "majority" government with other leading blocs, possibly excluding powerful Shiite actors like al-Fatah.

Analysts said he could strike deals with Sunni and Kurdish groups, such as those of outgoing parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halboosi's bloc, with 37 seats, and/or the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), with 31. https://www.shafaq.com/en/Kurdistan/Huqooq-denounces-the-ele

butterfly   2021-12-01 07:14   Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Minister of Oil, Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar expects OPEC to agree on extending its current production policies over the short term, he told the state news agency on Wednesday.

Iraq's stance will be aligned with the outcome of the next meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the minister said.

OPEC+ ministers, including those from the group's biggest producers Russia and Saudi Arabia, have said there was no need for a knee-jerk reaction to amend policy.

OPEC and its allies begin two days of meetings on Wednesday to decide whether to release more oil into the market or restrain supply amid big gyrations in crude prices and uncertainty about the impact of the Omicron coronavirus variant on energy demand.

Oil prices fell to near $70 a barrel on Tuesday, after hitting a three-year high above $86 in October, posting their biggest monthly decline in November since the start of the pandemic, as the new variant raised fears of a glut. https://www.shafaq.com/en/Economy/Iraq-expects-OPEC-sustains-current-output-policy
