The purchase price of the dollar is 1205 dinars, or 120 thousand and 500 dinars per hundred dollars.

Doug_W   The purpose of this note is to shed light, and comment, on two views expressed recently in relation to the appreciation of the Iraq Dinar (IQD) in 2006-2008.

Muhammad Tawfiq Alawi (henceforth M. Alawi), former minister of communications in Iraq, gave a talk on December 13, 2019 in Washington D.C. to an Iraqi audience, in which he mentioned the appreciation of the Iraqi Dinar (IQD) during 2006-2008 as an example of lack of economic planning in Iraq.

Mudher Muhammad Saleh (henceforth M. Saleh), former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI), and currently finance advisor to the outgoing prime minister, responded the following day, in an article published at the ‘Iraqi Economists Net.’

This note focuses on two observations, set out below:

Firstly, that the “independence” of the CBI was compromised in negotiating and signing a ‘Stand-By Agreement’ with the IMF in late 2005.

Secondly, by following the IMF programme in Iraq, the CBI’s administration focused its attention on limited instruments of monetary policy as dictated by the IMF, and much less on contributing to national economic growth and leveraging badly needed major structural changes in the economy.

They really let Kuwait down & the others involved. Kuwait tried to work with Iraq on how they RI'd their currency in 1991 but left on deaf eyes. Kuwait's currency went from 0.05usd to 3.48usd.

Baghdad- Iraq today:  The Sadekon bloc, a subsidiary of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement, on Wednesday revealed the name of a candidate who said he was "strong" for the prime minister, while stressing that the rest of the candidates' names ended their chances.

"The names that were put forward in the media before President Barham Saleh's departure now have no chances, but there is a name that is still on the table and there may be a political consensus, and maybe not, and that is not yet decided until it is officially announced," said Ahmed al-Kanani, a member of the bloc.

"The name currently coming up strongly is the head of the Iraqi intelligence service, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, who has the acceptability of some political blocs, and there are political blocs opposed to taking office, and perhaps the next few hours will clarify the situation once and for all," he said.

Iraq has been living in a constitutional vacuum since the deadline for the president to appoint a candidate to form the next government on December 16, due to deep disagreements over the candidate.

There have also been unprecedented protests since October 25, with violence that left some 600 people dead and more than 17,000 injured, mostof them protesters, according to human rights, medical and security sources.

The protesters forced the government of Adel Abdel Mahdi to resign on December 1, insisting that all political elites accused of corruption and waste of state funds, which have ruled since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003, be held accountable.
