chattels   I see no likely end to the political strife , parliamentary dysfunction and demonstrations by protesters until there is a new government and new elections, but to my knowledge Parliament has yet to approve the new election law which stalled for lack of a quorum in December.

The Kurds did not show due to concerns over electoral district vs. candidacy type provisions of the law. Voting was to resume on Mon 23 December. There has been no vote as yet.    LINK

chattels   News about ministers in the new government is limited unless you are a guru pontificating about secret meetings, etc., ad nauseam.

chattels   "the Prime Minister-designate promised the masses to support their demands for change and reform, and that he would not be a tool in the hands of the parties or political forces, but rather defending the rights and interests of the Iraqi people only," noting that "the Iraqi people went out to the demonstrations To demand change and this demand is the goal we want to support the Prime Minister in charge of the steps to form a government. "

chattels   and that "openness, reconciliation and transparency with the street is the most prominent feature of the next stage. And any special deals or interests at the expense of the higher interests of the homeland and the citizen have become from the past and will not return again, regardless of the size of the internal and external pressures. "

chattels   I stand corrected. I see now where that a new election law was approved by Parliament on December, 24, 2019.

chattels   BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq’s parliament approved a new election law on Tuesday aimed at giving political independents a better chance of winning seats in parliament.

The new law changes each of the country’s 18 provinces into several electoral districts, with one legislator elected per 100,000 people.

It also prevents parties from running on unified lists, which in the past have helped them easily sweep all the seats in a specific province. Instead, seats will go to whoever gets the most votes in the electoral districts. https://apnews.com/e608aeef311759aeeb7483ad3f9f33d5

chattels   Like the previous law, the new one allocates at least quarter of the parliament’s seats to women. A quota is also reserved for the country’s religious minorities, including Christians and Yazidis.

Most Kurdish and some Sunni Arab legislators boycotted Tuesday’s meeting in opposition to changing the law.

chattels   Iraq’s current 329-member parliament was elected in May 2018. The vote is held every four years, but the protesters have been demanding early elections and with the resignation of Mahdi and designation of Allawi as the new PM Iraq is headed for new elections, but it may take longer than many are predicting.

chattels   PM designate Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi now has 30 days to form a new govt. Many Iraqi politicians describe the new govt as a "temporary" one, on the assumption there will be fresh elections. But first parliament needs to dissolve itself which may well take longer than expected. https://twitter.com/reidarvisser?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

chattels   And that's the way that it is from the news that I find and read out of Iraq on this Tuesday, February 4, 2020.

chattels   He added: "The talks also include the presentation of each minister separately who Allawi chose for his new cabinet, for the purpose of obtaining the approval of the political blocs, before offering them to vote under the dome of Parliament." Noting that "most political forces leave the freedom of choice to the Prime Minister-designate, so that he bears responsibility for success Or his government’s failure. ”

Doug_W   chattels Soon, incoming days, shortly etc

chattels   UNITED NATIONS, New York – United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said Tuesday that the large number of armed groups in Iraq operating outside the formal command structure is preventing the country from functioning as a normal state. https://www.rudaw.net/english/world/04022020

chattels   UN chief Guterres said it is important to preserve the country’s unity and independence “to allow for Iraq to establish the normal functioning of a state”.

“One of the conditions of a normal functioning state is the monopoly of use of force by the state – by the army and the police that belong to the state,” Guterres told a press briefing.

chattels   “To preserve the stability of Iraq is crucial for the region and the implosion in Iraq will have devastating consequences for the region."

Doug_W   futuremoney not so sure of that

Dave   building up till the crescendo.....

chattels   We will know better what we have or are dealing with better when we can see the names of the new cabinet nominees I hope.

chattels   It occurs to me that Allawi is going to have to distance himself from even the appearance of impropriety of "connectedness" to political faction to have any chance of obtaining some approval from the protesters.

futuremoney   chattels question...do you really think the Iraq gov CARES about these protestors??!!

futuremoney   they are shooting them in the streets, lying about them and jailing them....nope, don't care

Dave   How about nominating a PM that will leave the green zone and actually join them in the streets

futuremoney   i believe many more are being either killed or jailed than is being reported

futuremoney   Dave why doesn't the protestors name their own PM?? cant do that either...

Dave   they have been asking for designates

chattels   Patty The figures regarding the impact of sanctions on the Iranian economy can be researched. See https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-48119109
