chattels NAJAF, Iraq—The United Nations' top official in Iraq and the country's most senior cleric urged authorities on Monday to get "serious" about reforms after anti-government demonstrations that have left hundreds dead.
chattels After weeks of paralysis, Iraq's top leaders seem to have agreed to keep the system intact, but the UN in Iraq (UNAMI) urged them to enact a host of changes.

A new constitution and a presidential system will undoubtedly centralize power, and most Middle Eastern countries – particularly Iraq – have played this record too many times before. Protestors decrying corruption must remain careful not to trade democratic rights for an equally corrupt centralized authoritarianism.
chattels While calling for an end to Iranian domination of Iraq stands out as a reasonable and necessary demand of the protestors, Iraqis need to effect such a change in the next election by voting for parties and leaders who do not serve Iran’s interests over that of Iraqis. In the meantime, protestors might consider accepting Abdul-Mahdi’s offers and giving him a chance to enact them. Iraq needs serious reform rather than another ill-fated revolution.

The Abd al-Mahdi govt has suffered irrepairable damage to its credibility and may be on life support, but whether the PM resigns next week, next month or next year, the elite is sufficiently united that truly systemic change is unlikely, but at the cost of regime legitimacy.
chattels The protest movement remains a powerful force, but at present it appears to lack the organizational capacity to genuinely challenge the system. It will change Iraq, but right now it looks like the main change will be an end to the facade of democracy.

Chattels Although there is an appearance of division within the political class, the "Iran" and "nationalist" camps are both working to defend the system. Absent a split in the regime, which could mean civil war, it will not fall.

Economy News – Baghdad Iraq lowered the official sale price of Basra light crude to Asia in December by 20 cents to $2.25 above the average Amman/Dubai prices offered compared to the previous month, according to a pricing document.
