Doug_W the ruling class seems to be up against teh wall here
chattels In a chaotic session Wed, #Iraq parliament started vote on elections law before session broke down over electoral district and candidacy type disagreement. Voting is now to resume on Mon 23 Dec
chattels The dynamics of the session collapse in the Iraqi parliament Wed are interesting in themselves. Only 61 MPs pf 207 present, primarily of the Kurdish parties, voted in favour of delay of the vote. When they withdrew quorum problems ensued and hence the postponement until Monday.
Doug_W sounds like the Dems yesterday in Congress UGGG
chattels Kurdish parties in Iraq are reportedly particularly concerned about the proposed shift from a list-dominated electoral system to individual candidacies which will put candidate qualities centre stage and reduce party leadership control.
chattels In resisting electoral system change, the Kurdish parties are on collision course with the #tahrirsquare protests. But the fact that only 61 of 207 MPs actually voted for delay of disputed articles suggests a majoritarian decision could be coming up next week - in itself a change
Doug_W U GO Iraq

chattels Some Iraqi media are describing this as "surprising," but it should not be: Abd al-Mahdi says he will stay on as caretaker PM until a new PM is sworn in. Everyone should have expected this. Also not surprising, but legally debateable, is Abd al-Mahdi's assertion that his govt has the right to sign int'l agreements, pass the budget, etc. Whether his claim is a valid interpretation or not, I don't think it will be effectively refuted. https://twitter.com/UticaRisk
