GLOBAL PAYMENTS RESET WATCH: BIS EXAMINES THE RACE BETWEEN BANKS, FINTECHS AND STABLECOINS
New research from the Bank for International Settlements compares the costs and limitations of competing cross-border payment systems as the global financial industry searches for faster, more affordable ways to move money.
OVERVIEW
Fintech money-transfer services can significantly reduce costs compared with traditional retail bank wires.
Stablecoins offer another payment option, but currency conversions, exchange fees, liquidity and access to bank accounts can add costs.
The global payments landscape is evolving, with competition and interoperability becoming central to the future of international money transfers.
KEY DEVELOPMENTS
1. Fintechs are challenging traditional bank transfer costs
The BIS research compares three ways to move money across borders: traditional bank wires, fintech money-transfer operators and stablecoin-based transfers.
Its findings show that fintech providers can substantially reduce costs compared with traditional retail bank wires. In the study's sample, bank foreign-exchange markups ranged from approximately 2% to 4.7%, before additional wire fees. For a $10,000 transfer from the United States to selected developed-market currency groups, median fintech costs were around 40–60.
These findings highlight why digital transfer providers are attracting attention: the cost of moving money internationally is becoming a competitive issue, not simply a banking inconvenience.
2. Stablecoins face practical limits despite their potential
Stablecoins—digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value, often by tracking a national currency such as the U.S. dollar—are frequently promoted as a faster way to transfer funds internationally.
The BIS study offers a more measured picture. Stablecoin transfers can require users to convert traditional money into digital tokens and then back into local currency. Trading fees, blockchain costs, withdrawal charges and delays in accessing funds can all affect the final price.
Stablecoins may offer favorable exchange pricing in some corridors, particularly between developed and certain emerging markets. However, thin liquidity, limited market depth and reliance on intermediaries can restrict their competitiveness.
The takeaway is not that stablecoins have no role. It is that the technology alone does not guarantee cheaper, easier or more reliable payments.
3. The future may involve competing payment systems—not one universal replacement
Banks, fintech companies and stablecoin providers are competing to improve international transfers. Each has advantages and weaknesses involving cost, liquidity, access, regulation and consumer trust.
Traditional banks already operate within established regulatory and settlement frameworks. Fintechs can streamline the customer experience and reduce fees. Stablecoins can offer digital transfer options across borders, but their usefulness depends on reliable conversion into national currencies and the ability to redeem them.
The emerging challenge is how these systems might coexist, connect and compete without creating new risks or fragmented networks.
For consumers and businesses, the most meaningful measure will be whether transfers become more affordable, transparent, accessible and dependable.
WHY IT MATTERS
Cross-border payments are essential to international trade, remittances, investment and business operations. Yet sending money between countries can still involve multiple intermediaries, currency conversions, fees and processing delays.
The BIS research matters because it examines the real costs of competing payment methods, rather than assuming that a newer technology is automatically better.
Several broader changes could follow as payment systems evolve:
Greater competition: Banks may face pressure to reduce transfer fees and improve service.
More payment choices: Customers could increasingly choose between traditional banking, fintech services and stablecoin-based transfers.
Pressure for interoperability: Payment networks need ways to connect across institutions, currencies and jurisdictions.
Greater regulatory importance: Authorities must address consumer protection, financial crime, liquidity and the safe redemption of digital money.
The research also highlights a critical point: a payment system is only as useful as its ability to connect with the rest of the financial world. A transfer that moves quickly on a digital network may still become costly or delayed when it reaches a currency-conversion service or bank account.
WHY IT MATTERS TO FOREIGN CURRENCY HOLDERS
For people following the possibility of a global financial reset, the evolution of payment infrastructure is an important development to watch.
Faster, less expensive cross-border transfers could make international commerce and remittances more efficient. They could also influence which providers businesses use and how different forms of money circulate across borders.
However, payment modernization is not the same as currency revaluation. The BIS paper does not announce a new global currency, establish a date for a financial reset or predict that stablecoins will replace national currencies.
Foreign currency holders should focus on measurable developments:
Are international transfer fees actually declining?
Are more banks and payment providers connecting their systems?
Are stablecoins becoming easier to redeem into national currencies?
Are regulators establishing clear rules for digital payments?
Are new systems improving access without compromising security or trust?
The practical lesson is to follow real-world adoption, published rules and demonstrated results, rather than assuming that a new payment technology will automatically increase the value of a currency.
THE FIVE PILLARS CONNECTION
Pillar 1: Debt
More efficient payment systems may reduce transaction costs for businesses and financial institutions. However, payment innovation alone does not resolve government debt or guarantee lower borrowing costs.
Pillar 2: Trade
International trade depends on businesses being able to pay suppliers and receive funds across borders. More competitive payment services could help reduce friction in global commerce.
Pillar 3: Assets
Stablecoins and other digital financial instruments are becoming part of the broader conversation about how value is held and transferred. Their long-term role will depend on liquidity, redemption, regulation and market confidence.
Pillar 4: Technology
This is the central pillar of the story. Digital payment networks, blockchain-based transfers and fintech platforms are challenging established methods of moving money. The next challenge is making different systems work together safely and efficiently.
Pillar 5: Energy
Energy companies operate across borders and often handle large international payments. More efficient payment infrastructure could benefit energy trading and supply-chain transactions, although the BIS study does not specifically measure those effects.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The Bank for International Settlements' research offers a practical look at the competition reshaping international payments. Fintechs have demonstrated cost advantages over traditional bank wires in the study, while stablecoins offer potential benefits alongside meaningful limitations. The future will depend on whether providers can deliver lower costs, reliable access, adequate liquidity and appropriate safeguards.
For global financial reset watchers, this is a development worth following because the evolution of the global financial system may be shaped not by one replacement currency, but by how effectively different forms of money and payment networks work together.
