Currency Reform Before Removing Zeros
Baghdad/Iraq Observer As discussions resurface regarding the future of the Iraqi currency and the possibility of removing zeros or replacing the dinar, the importance of prioritizing economic and monetary policies as a foundation for any future reform measures is paramount.
There are strong assertions that strengthening the currency's value and restoring confidence in it necessitates comprehensive financial and economic reforms that precede any decisions concerning the currency's form or the number of zeros.
Economic researcher Dr. Safwan Qusay emphasized that determining the fair value of the Iraqi dinar and reconsidering the number of zeros in the currency fall under the purview of the Central Bank of Iraq's monetary policy.
He pointed out that proceeding with removing zeros or replacing the currency requires laying the appropriate economic groundwork and should not be done in isolation from the necessary reforms.
Qusay told Iraq Observer, "Monetary policy is responsible for determining the dinar's value, while the government of Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi is expected to implement a financial and economic reform program that contributes to diversifying income sources and strengthening the national economy.
Achieving economic diversification is a fundamental prerequisite before proceeding with any move related to changing the currency or removing zeros."
He added that “addressing the currency issue is not limited to changing its form or nominal value, but also requires taking measures to curb counterfeiting and help recover the cash holdings outside the banking system or abroad.”
He pointed to the possibility of expanding the use of electronic cards in financial transactions as part of the transition to electronic payments and strengthening oversight of money flows.
He stressed that “the success of any monetary measure is linked to the progress of financial and economic reforms and the ability of the relevant institutions to provide the requirements for stability.”
He explained that changing the exchange rate, removing zeros, or replacing the currency should come at a later stage, after completing the necessary foundations for reform.
This approach places comprehensive economic reform at the forefront of priorities, as it is the most important entry point for building confidence in the Iraqi dinar and strengthening monetary stability, while decisions regarding the future of the currency remain the prerogative of the Central Bank, based on economic indicators and the requirements of the next phase.

"Iraq Is Above Interests And The State Is Above Authorities," Al-Kadhimi Calls For Prioritizing National Loyalty And Limiting The Legitimacy Of Weapons To The Constitution And State Institutions
Baghdad - One News - 10/27/2026 Former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi called for prioritizing national interests over political and sectarian interests, establishing the rule of law, and limiting the legitimacy of weapons to the constitutional institutions of the state.
Al-Kadhimi said in a post on his X website that true patriotism requires that Iraq be above interests, the state above authorities, and citizenship above sect and tribalism, stressing the need for the law to remain a reference for all, and for sovereignty to be one and the decision to be national.
Al-Kadhimi stressed that weapons are a trust that derives its legitimacy only from the constitution and state institutions, in an emphasis on the importance of consolidating the authority of official institutions and the unity of security decision-making, and preventing the multiplicity of centers of power and loyalties.
He added that the state is not based on the dominance of one party over another, but rather represents a guarantee for all Iraqis, stressing that it is more enduring than the government and higher than political and societal divisions.
The former prime minister stressed that national responsibility requires protecting Iraq’s present and building its future in a manner consistent with its historical legacy and status, calling for the consolidation of the concept of a unified state that transcends narrow affiliations and is not contested by any loyalty.
Al-Kadhimi concluded his post by emphasizing the importance of building a state where no affiliation supersedes it, and no loyalty rivals it, in a call to strengthen national unity and consolidate the rule of law and state institutions.

Al-Atroushi: Iraq's Designation As A State Sponsor Of Terrorism Is Possible If It Does Not Comply
Latest News Tuesday, October 27, 2026 Baghdad - One News - Deputy Speaker of Parliament Farhad Al-Atroushi revealed that the United States has extended the deadline given to Iraq to restrict weapons to the state until June 30, 2027, warning of the possibility of imposing economic sanctions on Baghdad and classifying it as a state sponsor of terrorism if it does not comply with the specified date.
Al-Atroushi said that the US chargé d'affaires informed him that Washington had shown flexibility in changing the previous date from September 30 to June 30, 2027, which would give the Iraqi government an additional opportunity to address the weapons issue.
He added that there is a high probability of imposing economic sanctions on Iraq, and perhaps designating it as a state sponsor of terrorism, if the state and the groups concerned do not commit to restricting weapons to official institutions.
Al-Atroushi stressed that Washington will not compromise on this issue, noting that maintaining a strong alliance, bilateral relations, and a strategic agreement with the United States requires addressing the arms issue, given both sides' adherence to their interests and conditions in managing the relationship. https://1news-iq.net/الأتروشي-تصنيف-العراق-دولة-راعية-للإر/
Institute For The Study Of War: Washington Hopes To Appoint Khazali To "Disarm The Factions"
Latest News Tuesday, October 27, 2026 Baghdad - One News - The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has revealed a possible shift in the position of President Donald Trump’s administration regarding the participation of figures linked to pro-Iranian armed factions in the Iraqi government, following the appointment of Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq leader Laith al-Khazali as deputy prime minister, despite his inclusion on US sanctions lists.
The institute stated that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi managed to convince the Trump administration not to object to the appointment of Laith al-Khazali, the brother of the leader of the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement, on the basis that this step would help the government implement the plan to disarm the armed factions.
He explained that Washington had previously refused to allow individuals linked to groups that the United States classifies as terrorist organizations to assume government positions, but its position appears to have changed after Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq announced, on June 2nd, its readiness to hand over its weapons to the Iraqi government.
