BRICS Not Opposed To the US Dollar, Confirms Diplomat

Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov confirmed at the NDTV Defense Summit that the BRICS alliance is not opposed to the US dollar. He stressed that no member nation has spoken in an anti-Western tone at the September summit in India. Member countries have also not promoted any form of anti-Western agenda to push policies, he said.

The US dollar will remain as one of the primary currencies for trade within the BRICS bloc, confirmed Alipov. The diplomat explained that the alliance is like any other global organization that eventually wants to cater to the needs of the members. This is a complete U-turn from the bloc after actively seeking de-dollarization since 2022.

US Dollar is a Part of BRICS, Stresses Diplomat

Alipov revealed that while options to use local currencies for trade are the primary goal, no BRICS member has opposed settling cross-border transactions in the US dollar.

“It is an alternative to other global platforms and organizations, such as the G20, for example, and other international formats. And no one in BRICS has ever spoken in an anti-Western manner or promoted an anti-Western agenda,” he said.

“The discussion about the use of the US dollar is very indicative in this regard. No one is opposed to the use of the US currency. We, the BRICS countries, favor having alternatives provided by the use of national currencies,” the diplomat stressed.

Therefore, the alliance is open to all forms of payments and will not sideline any currency for trade. The move will protect the dominance of the US dollar against any onslaught.

This was evident even during the 18th BRICS summit in September in India, as none of the member nations spoke about ending reliance on the US dollar. Talks about strengthening local currencies were made, but that remains intact for five years. The superiority of the US dollar remains intact, with little to no threat to uproot it from the world’s reserve currency status.

BRICS De-Dollarization Could Be Serious in 2027 Under China’s Chairmanship

Vinod Dsouza   September 21, 2026 Before the BRICS 2026 summit in New Delhi, India had washed its hands clean of the de-dollarization agenda. High-ranking officials repeatedly made statements saying that India will trade in the US dollar and not abandon the currency. Other members had to toe the line and accept that the summit would not go against the West.

However, things could change next year as China will host the BRICS summit in 2027, and the Xi Jinping administration could come up with several de-dollarization initiatives for the bloc. Sergey Ryabkov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, said in a press conference that Russia will accept whatever priorities China places on the table at the 19th summit.

De-Dollarization Can Take a New Turn at the BRICS 2027 Summit in China

Russia has been a staunch ally of China, as the country has been with it through thick and thin. From helping it to trade in local currencies to accepting the ruble and procuring oil, China has kept the Russian economy afloat since the US imposed sanctions in February 2022. Therefore, if China initiates a de-dollarization roadmap at the next BRICS summit, Russia will be the first to back it.

“BRICS is not just about continuity; it always bears the significant imprint of the chairmanships that succeed one another,” he added. Sergey revealed that China is making an effort to create an “intra-BRICS environment” conducive to the barrier-free movement of technologies and capital. He also stressed that China could find modern breakthroughs in AI technologies and uplift the alliance as a whole.

“I would venture to suggest that modern breakthrough technologies, with artificial intelligence at their core, supply chains, the modern payment and financial system, and logistics issues in the economic sphere, will be the focus of the Chinese presidency in the coming year. They need to make their position on this topic clear. We will support these priorities. And we share this approach in the economic, innovation, and technology areas of BRICS work,” he said
