butterfly   Iraq has expressed keenness on cooperating with the international community, namely with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The organization announced it would dramatically scale up its mission in Iraq from 500 personnel to 4,000.

Iraq's National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji said: "Iraq is keen to cooperate with the international community. Iraqi forces have great experiences gained through combat," noting that "exchanging experiences is crucial to confront terrorism and extremism."

This came during a meeting between Araji and the commander of the NATO mission in Iraq, Pierre Olsen.

Araji said that his country is not part of any regional problem, but rather part of the solution.

Iraq will work to benefit from the experiences of NATO because ISIS is still a threat so far, he explained.

For his part, Olsen said: “The NATO mission in Iraq continues at the request of the Iraqi leadership, and the expansion of the staff may be at the request of this country.”

butterfly  2021-02-22 06:51    Shafaq News/ The Parliamentary Finance Committee on Monday that it had submitted the draft budget law for 2021 to the Presidency of Parliament with the share of Kurdistan Region unresolved.

A source in the committee told Shafaq News, "The Finance Committee handed over the Presidency of the Council of Representatives the 2021 budget bill without resolving or settling the Kurdistan region's share."

"The Presidency of Parliament shall schedule a session to vote on the budget law," he continued, "most likely next Thursday."

Negotiations over the Kurdistan Region's share of the Federal 2021 budget continue amid Shiite tenacity, member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee stated yesterday, Sunday.

Committee member, Jamal Kocher, said in a statement to Shafaq News Agency, "the Parliamentary Finance Committee was able to resolve all problems and disputes related to the General Budget Law for 2021, except for the share of Kurdistan Region."

He added, "the Shiite blocs still refuse to settle the region's share of the budget. Moreover, it did not develop a new formula that replaces the formula stipulated in the budget bill."

"The political dialogues and negotiations are proceeding between the blocs and the Kurdish delegation. We hope to resolve the issue this week."

butterfly  Iraq decides not to go ahead with $2 bln China crude-supply deal, says Oil Minister     2 Iraq has decided against signing an oil-supply deal with a Chinese state company that would have seen the cash-strapped Arab nation get about $2 billion upfront, according to its oil minister.

Baghdad opted not to go ahead with the contract after oil prices rose in recent months, Ihsan Abdul Jabbar said in an interview with BBC Arabic.

butterfly  Iraq, whose economy is reeling after last year’s crash in crude prices, in November asked oil traders to bid for a five-year supply deal. Baghdad proposed delivering 4 million barrels a month, or about 130,000 barrels a day, with the buyer paying upfront for one year of supply.

China’s Zhenhua Oil Co., a subsidiary of defense contractor Norinco, won the bid, Bloomberg reported in December.

Prepayment deals are rare in the oil world and this was meant to improve Iraq’s financial situation. While the government is still struggling, its position has improved because oil prices have soared 62 percent since the start of November to around $63 a barrel, largely thanks to the roll-out of coronavirus vaccines.

OPEC’s second-biggest producer had wanted as much liquidity as possible in January and February this year and was concerned that oil prices would not exceed $40 a barrel, Jabbar said in the interview.

After prices stabilized, “we decided to freeze this attempt or option and we did not activate it,” BBC Arabic cited him as saying.

In an interview with the Iraq Oil Report earlier this month, Finance Minister Ali Allawi said pre-payment oil deals were problematic because they required a sovereign guarantee.

No casualties reported, says Iraqi Defense Ministry   Ali Jawad |  23.02.2021

butterfly   A rocket attack targeted Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, an area that hosts most foreign diplomatic missions including the US embassy, Iraq's Defense Ministry said Monday.

"Two Katyusha rockets landed in the Green Zone area in Baghdad, no casualties reported," the ministry said in a statement.

A security source told Anadolu Agency that one of the rockets landed near the headquarters of Iraq's National Security Service while the other landed near a presidential palace in the area.

He added that several vehicles were damaged in the attack.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility.

The Green Zone has regularly come under rocket attack since the assassination in January last year of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike.

Washington blames Iran-backed Shia militias for such rocket attacks on foreign diplomatic missions and the US and foreign troops in Iraq.   *Ahmed Asmar contributed to this report from Ankara
