CandyKisses:  World Bank warns of risks of global recession in 2023

The World Bank said it was concerned that "more adverse shocks" could push the global economy into recession in 2023, and said small countries were particularly vulnerable.

The bank issued the warning in a summary of its semi-annual Global Economic Prospects report due on Tuesday, which will be available on the website's Open Knowledge Platform.

The World Bank said that even without another crisis, global growth in 2023 "is expected to slow sharply, reflecting simultaneous monetary policy tightening aimed at containing very high inflation, deteriorating financial conditions and ongoing turmoil caused by the Russia-Ukraine war."

The Washington-based World Bank said the situation required "urgent global and national efforts" to mitigate downside risks, as well as the debt crisis in emerging markets and developing economies, as investment growth is expected to remain below average over the past two decades.

"It is critical that officials in emerging markets and developing countries ensure that any financial support focuses on vulnerable groups, inflation expectations remain well steady, and that financial systems continue to be resilient," the bank said.

Central bankers from around the world have introduced similar measures, raising interest rates aggressively to ease price pressures, while governments are supporting businesses and households by containing energy costs.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva issued a warning in early 2023 that the world was facing "a difficult year, harder than the previous year."

Georgieva told CBS's Face the Nation in an interview broadcast on Jan. 1 that a third of the global economy will face a recession as the United States, the European Union and China experience a slowdown in the growth of economies simultaneously.
