The Iraqi Crisis.. Signs Of A Solution And A Possible Confrontation

01/10/2022    Hadi Glow Merhi         Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi admits that the current political crisis that his country is going through is the most difficult since 2003, and he is absolutely right, after an armed confrontation caused the death of dozens in the first clash of its kind between political forces that resorted to arms in an atmosphere of emotion and tension, and the inability to bring about understandings.

A quality that overcomes difficulties that characterizes general political behavior, where the mutual rejection of suggestions and initiatives, with initiatives that intersect and contradict, and the differences remain the most prominent in the confrontation between the two most prominent Shiite factions (the coordination framework), which includes many political factions, and (the Sadrist movement), which is led by Muqtada al-Sadr.

The political crisis began after the results of the October 2021 elections, in which the Sadrist movement was declared the winner of 73 seats, was met with rejection and skepticism by the Shiite alliance, which was later called the coordination framework in which forces that were intersecting with each other and competing, including those who were an ally of the Sadrist movement, and at that time allied themselves Al-Sadr and the Sunni Sovereignty Alliance, which includes the Progress Party headed by Muhammad al-Halbousi, and the alliance of Sheikh Khamis al-Khanjar, and the two parties made a tripartite alliance with the Kurdistan Democratic Party led by Mr. Masoud Barzani, which achieved the highest votes in the Kurdistan region, and the Salvation Alliance was announced, which included these three forces.

The opposite alliance included Shiite, Kurdish and Sunni forces, which indicates the occurrence of political divisions within the same components, indicating that Iraq has overcome the ordeal of sectarian and national conflict, into a conflict of components where the differences between Shiites themselves, Sunnis and Kurds, this counter coalition included the Shiite coordination framework, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and its stronghold Sulaymaniyah and its president is the late Jalal Talabani, who includes the current president, Barham Salih, and intersects with the Kurdistan Democratic Party and its stronghold, Erbil, which rejects Barham Salih’s candidacy for a second term.

The Save a Homeland Alliance succeeded in holding a session to elect Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi, and here began the ordeal of the political process that was paralyzed after al-Sadr withdrew his deputies from Parliament, which caused a suffocating crisis and a great blockage, followed by the announcement of the Sadrist movement an open sit-in at the gate of the House of Representatives, and widespread protestsIt prevented the holding of a session that the coordination framework intended to hold to elect a candidate for prime minister, as tension escalated to the level of armed confrontation that caused the death of 37 people and wounding of dozens, followed by a state of calm, an attempt to reduce tension, and initiatives by active forces.

The head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, led an initiative in partnership with the head of the Sovereignty Alliance Khamis al-Khanjar and Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi. Its path is beset with intractable obstacles and tense situations that complicate the scene further, and Iraqis fear the threat of a violent confrontation that may extend to other regions of the country in the coming days unless an agreement is reached that satisfies the parties to the crisis, and contributes to the formation of a government of services that provides guarantees of a decent life for all Iraqi citizens without discrimination.    https://earthiq.news/archives/147472
