An International Team Adopts The Eco-Park Project In The Marshes
Posted On 2021-08-18 By Sotaliraq Nature Iraq announced yesterday the adoption of an international team supported by the local government and the Ministry of Water Resources for the eco-park project in the marshlands, and indicated that the project uses plant culture technology to treat sewage water, absorb heavy elements, and purify polluted water for reuse for agricultural purposes.
The regional director of Nature Iraq in southern Iraq and the marshlands, engineer Jassim al-Asadi, told Al-Mada that "two members of the international team concerned with establishing the ecological park in the marshes areas arrived in Dhi Qar Governorate recently and were briefed on the field of the project site in the Majjari area in the Al-Jbayish marshes."
Noting that the work team adopting the idea of the project consists of nine specialists, experts and volunteer scientists from several countries, including Italy, America, the Netherlands, Britain and Iraq, and these form a joint group working under the umbrella of the International Institute of Plant Technologies, which is based in New Mexico, USA.
Al-Asadi explained that "the idea of an ecological garden and sewage treatment using the plant culture method, which was presented by Nature Iraq, attracted the attention of a team of scientists and specialists," noting that "the members of the team contributed to developing visions and designs appropriate for the cultivation of natural plants that have the ability to treat sewage water through Absorption of heavy elements and solids, purification and recycling of water for the purpose of using them in the cultivation of environmentally friendly plants in the ecological garden.”
The regional director indicated that "the project will start in its initial stages in the Hungarian Marsh in the Chabayish marsh, where the site of the sewage plant was chosen to establish the aforementioned garden," stressing "the possibility of using marsh plants such as reeds, sedge, water lentils and other local plants in heavy water purification operations to be suitable for agriculture." .
Al-Asadi affirmed, "The completion of studies and designs for the project, and that the start of its implementation will be launched during the current month, as promised by the Ministry of Water Resources," noting that "the completion of the works of the first phase of the project will be during the current year, and then the work of the second phase will start to include the rest of the stations in the marsh areas." .
The source added that "the project will be circulated to all sewage stations in the marshlands, if the initial experiments are successful, to contribute to eliminating pollution in the waters of the marshes, which is affecting biodiversity, public health and water quality," stressing that "the local government in Dhi Qar and the Ministry of Resources The water park has expressed its support for the project, and the proposed second phase of the project is to establish a marsh garden that simulates the Sumerian gardens and depends entirely on the purification of heavy water and its use for agricultural purposes.”
The Iraqi marshlands suffer from the presence of many sewage stations that receive heavy and polluted water in the marshes of Chabayish, Hamar, Medina, the central marshes and other areas of the marshes, not to mention dumping it into the Euphrates River that feeds the marsh areas, and this causes high water pollution because the mentioned stations lack the required treatment units .
The Dhi Qar Environment Directorate had previously warned against the discharge of sewage and heavy water in the marshes, and confirmed at the time that it had monitored cases of environmental pollution in the marshes caused by the dumping of wastewater from the sewage stations (Al-Ghamiha), (Al-Sajiya) and (Um Bazoun) in the Jabayish marshes. She indicated that the first station drains sewage and rainwater directly into the Chabayish marshes without treatment, while the other two stations dump sewage into the Um Al-Jozoo`, Al-Majri and Um Bzoun canals, which flow into the central marshes.
For his part, Italian expert Davidi Toggetto, one of the members of the team adopting the ecological park project, said that "the management of the ecological park project will focus on treating sewage water in Chabayish and recycling it for the ecological park and helping the local population in the environmental and health fields," adding that "this project is important and it is the fruit of Cooperation between the international team, Nature Iraq, the Ministry of Water Resources and the local government in Dhi Qar and Jabayish.
"The environmental project is the first of this kind in Iraq, and we will complete the first phase that we have planned for many years," David said.
In turn, the governor of Dhi Qar, Ahmed Ghani Al-Khafaji, welcomed the project and said during his meeting with a number of team members that “the governorate administration commends the initiatives of Nature Iraq, represented by its regional director, Engineer Jassim Al-Asadi, especially his continuous efforts to attract institutions, international organizations and donors for the purpose of taking care of the marshlands and protecting the Marsh environment.” "We welcome the work team and are ready to provide the required support for the success of their work programs in the province," he added.
The areas of the marshes constitute one fifth of the area ofDhi Qar governorate, and they are distributed among ten administrative units out of the twenty that the governorate includes. percent of the total area ofthe Nasiriyah marshes, but this submerged area quickly shrinks dramatically after every water crisis that the country goes through.
