Average Per Capita Income

Monday 07 February 2022  175   Mohamed Sharif Abu Maysam   One of my children told me, that the local media quoted a statement from a government source, according to which he revealed that the average per capita income in 2021 had risen to $6 thousand, wondering, (Does this mean that I, as an individual, got $6 thousand last year?).

I do not hide from you a secret that I was embarrassed by referring the question as if I had confiscated the amount from his pocket in my capacity as responsible for the financial affairs in the house, which prompted me to elaborate and then write this column; In order to unveil what is rumored from time to time in this regard in the media.

The concept of “average per capita income” does not mean the money that individuals receive during one year, but rather it is the result of dividing the gross domestic product by the number of the population, and it has nothing to do with the realism or unrealisticness of the distribution of wealth, because the gross domestic product is a tool for measuring economic performance , as it is the total value of all final goods and services produced by any country, and a comprehensive criterion for measuring productivity, and on the basis of which it is also measured in terms of population, countries are arranged into rich countries and poor countries, and the total value of all final goods and services usually returns to owners of capital from the private sector. And foreign and domestic investors in the market economy scene after tax deductions.

That is, the state is concerned with revenue from the tax base and customs duties only, as the private sector assumes the functions of the real sectors and the sectors supporting them, up to the point of privatizing state functions in the system of market liberalization, while the total value of all final goods and services to the state returns to the state's economic system, and this may be reflected Specifically in the state's economic system at the level of per capita income.

Accordingly, the indicator of a rise in the average individual income does not necessarily mean an indicator of a rise in individual income, which includes cash and non-monetary properties that individuals obtain during a specific period of time due to revenues resulting from their rights to ownership of rents, investments, salaries, rewards, etc., and these revenues constitute the individual’s income.

It is usually referred to economically after deducting taxes from it, and “average per capita income” does not indicate the well-being of individuals in a market liberal system, even if that country is one of the Group of Twenty countries that is referred to as the most economically strongest among the countries of the world, including India and Brazil, for example. It is said that they are witnessing huge increases in GDP, but the poverty rate in these two countries has ranged between 20 to 30 percent for years.
