Reports & Analytics   Washington   breaking   Al-Kazemi government   Sadrist movement protests

2022-08-18 04:57   Shafaq News/ The British "Middle East Eye" website painted a scene of the absence of the United States and its embassy in Baghdad, from the current political developments in Iraq, its position on the conflict between the two Shiite blocs, and its vision to the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, noting that the main American intervention is an attempt Mediation in the Kurdistan Region to agree on a presidential candidate.

At the outset, the report translated by Shafak News Agency drew attention to: Two days after the demonstrators stormed the Iraqi parliament in July, a statement was issued by the "Ashab al-Kahf" group addressing what it considers the real source of the political collapse in Iraq, where the group said that the US embassy, the British embassy and other NATO countries are causing unrest among the Shiites Threatened to target "all their embassies and bases".

The report indicated that while the Iranian-backed militia accuses the United States of being involved in the chaos in Iraq, analysts and former US officials say that the current crisis indicates a diminishing US power and interest in this country.

The report quoted the former US ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman, who is now president of the Gulf States Institute in Washington, as saying that "the United States has little to do with what is happening in Iraq, and has few methods to influence it, either positively or negatively."

'absent involvement'

The report confirmed; Washington has become less present in Iraq today, compared to what it was decades ago, adding that while 2,500 US soldiers remained in Iraq, the Pentagon's combat mission against ISIS late last year shifted to the role of "advising and helping" to support the Iraqi army, noting that This modest presence extended beyond the military field.

Meanwhile, Iraq has received only two high-level visits from the US government in the months since the parliamentary elections, while the sprawling US embassy with limited staff from 2019 when Washington ordered all "non-emergency" employees to leave Iraq under threats. a wish.

The report quoted the former director of Iraq in the Ministry of Defense Jonathan Lord, who is the current director of the Middle East Security Program at the "CNAS" research institute, as saying that "the US involvement in the Iraqi political process has been almost completely absent."

The report went on to say that some consider that the past ten months since the elections were a missed opportunity for the United States, which welcomed the elections with caution and supported the introduction of changes to a law facilitating the entry of independent and reformist candidates into parliament.

According to Ambassador Silliman, "the outcome of the elections was very satisfactory to Washington, as the United States saw the elections as a relatively good indication that Iraq is moving towards more stable institutional policies and the creation of more moderate governments."

Sadr and Washington

However, the British report considered that "there is little love between the United States and Sadr."

He added that some in Washington viewed him as a potential option to confront Iran, despite concerns about his "thirst for power and his goals for religious rule along the lines of Iran's theocracy."

The report quoted Heib Hegel, Iraq analyst at the International Crisis Group, as saying that "the United States views Al-Sadr as a fickle nationalist with a huge base.

He is also seen as someone who can be directed in a direction beneficial to the United States, which Washington tried to do, and will continue to do so." in doing."

The report pointed out that the United States has limited scope for dialogue with al-Sadr, as the Sadrists in the government deal with Western officials, but they refuse to talk directly to the United States, and that contacts between the two parties are a task left to mediators.

The Kurds and Washington

The report stated; Analysts and former US officials say that   "Washington's main political efforts in Iraq after the October elections revolve around an attempt to mediate talks between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, in order to agree on a consensus candidate for the presidency."

The report also quoted the director of the Iraq Initiative at Chatham House, Renad Mansour, as saying that "the declared position of the United States after the elections is that it is neutral, but the preferred path for some was the tripartite alliance between the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the Sunnis and the Sadrists to slowly remove the groups allied with Iran.".

The report also quoted Laheeb Hagel as saying, "The reason we haven't seen a lot of talk about the United States in the political process in Iraq, is simply because it doesn't have a big role, and it didn't want to."

And after the report referred to the ISIS war, the faltering economy, the spread of poverty and corruption, the high costs of food and other living and the phenomenon of drought, and Washington’s previous preoccupation with withdrawing from Afghanistan and then the Ukrainian war,

he said that  this terrible situation means that a series of weak governments in Iraq were looking for signs of their success abroad. Referring to Baghdad's efforts to organize mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and work on integration with Jordan and Egypt, President Joe Biden described Baghdad as a "platform for diplomacy."

He added that the Iraqi government's focus on diplomatic campaigns abroad made it seem more inattentive and not sufficiently responsive to the needs of ordinary Iraqi citizens, such as those besieging parliament.

"Can we celebrate a government in which the main successes come when they go to conferences abroad, while the country is collapsing?" Mansour from "Chatham House" was quoted as asking.

The report concluded by saying that "in the meantime, the political crisis in Iraq continues, while the US embassy in Baghdad is still terrifyingly empty."

The Culture Of Consumption In Iraq (The Phenomenon Of Malls As An Example)

Saturday, 08-2022,Pm 7:45 Karar Al Asadi 222

Written by: Razak Aday

In the sixties, the book of the German philosopher of origin - Herbert Marcuse - appeared from the Frankfurt School, (The One-Dimensional Man), which later became one of the inspiring sources for the revolution of the student and youth uprising -68 - for all of Europe and France in particular.

The book talks centrally about what he calls the consumer society in Industrial systems,

one of its manifestations is the destruction of the natural reason preached by the Enlightenment, at the beginning of the first eras of modernity, but with the progress and brutality of capitalist societies, this mind has shifted from its first compass and has become (a tool) with motives and a consumerist structure, which the capitalist society reached, and

this deviation from enlightenment in the field of Reason is from the nature and core of the capitalist system, in which the pace of production increases in order to achieve a continuous increase in consumption, and vice versa, relentlessly.

There is an important chapter in this book in which he talks about the culture in consumer societies,

describing it also takes a consumer nature necessarily in line with the increasing pace and speed of life. Capitalist societies have gone through, and the current model for this phenomenon is Iraq, here it will be very problematic, meaning that some of the culture will be an echo of an external rhythm.

About a dilemma that he worries about after he has transcended modernity, which is at the heart of his life with its development, and the latter in its transparent and solid forms, and the same applies to the consumer society, as culture that is not mature to a high level of consumption will be in great embarrassment when the element of consumption is not saturated, or when the whole society is living A stage in which pre-state problems.

The term consumption refers to the interdependence of economic activities with cultural practice, and this practice is precisely determined in the light of capital and the psychology of individuals.

The term consumption culture is used to ensure that the world of commodities plays a key role in understanding contemporary society.

The psychological analysis of consumption culture emphasizes two dimensions:

First: The dimension The cultural meaning of the economic process, which is meant to give symbolic meanings to material goods, and use them as media for social communication.

The second: the economics of cultural goods, which is an effective and influential philosophy in the field of lifestyles and lifestyle of groups and social strata in different societies and cultures.

It breathes according to the volatile market situation and looks towards urgent material profits, while the development of culture and the cultural development of the community needs continuity and communication,

starting from penetrating the depth of this society and returning to its beginnings to contact its foundations, and then reviving it and restoring what the winds of time are trying to disintegrate and erase.

The lagging countries are mostly ruled and led by people who do not know what the economy means, and do not understand its role in building a strong and developed state.

Since the emergence of traditional economic theory, the world has experimented with multiple models, which have led to different results.

The cultural level and awareness in society to accommodate forms of production, consumption and investment has played a decisive role.

In the rapid pace of transformations, and in the reception of modernity and modernization, it has been proven that cultural differences tend to favor the most capable investors who are familiar with a culture other than his.

Iraq is living in the fever of opening malls in an indication of the decline of its economy compared to its counterparts in the world, and

it is strange that the previous Iraqi governments and the Investment Authority consider this an indicator of economic development in the capital, while most of the heads invested in those malls come from loans provided by government banks,

in addition to the fact that companies The owners of these projects are economic fronts for powerful forces, personalities and groups.

Economists consider these malls without any productive and economic feasibility for the local macro economy.

Rather, they are money laundering for the corrupt, not to mention that they perpetuate a distorted consumer culture,

given that Iraq’s economy is not based on a solid economic base, so there is no production except for oil, which finances the government and covers its expenses and the army Its great staff.

Revealed The Reason For The Rise In The Iraqi Central Reserve Of The Dollar .. What Is The Relationship Of The Currency Auction?

An economic center revealed the reason for the high reserves of the Central Bank of Iraq.

And the Future Center said in a statistic followed by (Al-Oula News), that “dollar purchases by the Central Bank from the Ministry of Finance for the period from the beginning of 2021 until the seventh month of the current year amounted to 79.8 billion US dollars.

In return, the Central Bank sold, through the dollar sale window, for the same period 65.5 billion

This led to an increase in the central bank’s foreign currency reserves by 14.3 billion dollars.

He added,  "The Central Bank buys the dollar from the Ministry of Finance to cover the central government's needs of the local currency and sells it back through the foreign currency sale window to cover the domestic demand for the dollar,"

noting that  "the value of dollar purchases from the Ministry of Finance rose as a result of the rise in Iraq's oil revenues, which created Government surplus of US dollars that you sell to the Central Bank.”

He pointed out, "Despite the demand for the dollar in the local market, this demand did not equal the amount of abundance of the dollar in the Central Bank."

And he indicated, “The central bank, in the event that bank deposits or government institutions’ deposits in local currency are not sufficient with the Central Bank and does not increase dollar sales through the window to provide the local currency, increases the issued cash currency to meet the demand coming from the central government for the local currency, which made the value of the currency

The issued cash is more than 82 trillion Iraqi dinars, an increase of 19% compared to the beginning of 2021, where the value of the issued cash currency was 68.9 trillion Iraqi dinars,

so the central bank increases its dollar sales through the window to provide the local currency needed for the central government without the need to increase the issued cash currency“.
