Home | News & Events | Statement by Secretary Michael R. Pompeo On the Occasion of Eid al-Adha

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE   Office of the Spokesperson  July 31, 2020

On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, we wish Muslims in the United States and around the world Eid Mubarak. Eid al-Adha is a time for compassion, generosity, and sacrifice – values demonstrated by Abraham’s commitment to God. Eid marks the end of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca normally performed by millions of Muslims from all corners of the world. We recognize the great disappointment felt by many prospective pilgrims this year and hope you will have the opportunity to perform Hajj in the near future.

As with religious observances of many faith communities during this pandemic, Eid al-Adha and Hajj will be unusual this year. We applaud the efforts and devotion of Muslims around the world to stop the pandemic’s spread and serve those in need while maintaining physical distancing.

On behalf of the United States Department of State, I wish you a happy and blessed Eid al-Adha.

Iraqi port employees demonstrate in Basra

Energy   Economy News - Basra:  The Ministry of Oil decided to approach the Council of Ministers to obtain approval that the Iraqi Ports Company should not interfere with oil ports and withdraw all work related to the anchorage and takeoff of oil tankers in Basra Governorate.

Dozens of Iraqi port employees demonstrated against this trend, accusing the Oil Ministry of keeping their company away from work in the oil ports.

Khaled Saad, the head of the Iraqi Bahraini Institution, described the corruption procedures for withdrawing oil ports from the Iraqi Ports Company, and said that there are corrupt contracts represented by the presence of a Kuwaiti company that the Oil Ministry wishes to contract with instead of the Oil Ports Company.

On the other hand, the Basra Oil Company said in a press release that our company is responsible for managing, producing and exporting oil exclusively through oil ports, and that the procedures that it undertakes or demands it come from its firm belief in working on professional management and technical specialization and supporting the national economy and not to serve interests Narrow.

She added that the Iraq Ports Company’s signing of contracts for joint operation with local contractors to manage the marine operations of the oil ports has resulted in very large losses in the profits and incentives of the company’s employees, and it was referred to and confirmed by the reports of the Financial Supervision Bureau, and our company has objected to these unfair contracts since 2018 and to the management Ports company to take corrective measures in order to protect their financial and legal rights.
