Almost Complete Power Outage In Iraq, And The Government Is Silent

Energy  Economy News _ Baghdad  Electricity has been cut off in most parts of Iraq since yesterday, without knowing the reasons.

The responsible government agencies did not explain the reasons behind the power outage, while sources stated that the reasons were multiple, including the targeting of power towers simultaneously and the lack of Iranian gas supply due to the accumulated debts, while other sources in the south of the country indicated that an emergency technical event occurred on the national grid and the separation of all generation plants from Work in the southern region, including the Nasiriyah Thermal Station and the Nasiriyah Compound Station.

Iraq is suffering from a severe heat wave, as temperatures exceeded 52 degrees Celsius in most of its regions.

Comment From The International Energy Agency On The “Collapse” Of The Electricity System In Iraq

Energy    Economy News – Baghdad  A widespread power outage hit Iraq on Friday as temperatures reached scorching levels, affecting millions of Iraqis, including in wealthy areas of the capital, and raising fears of widespread unrest.

The Iraqi grid was generating just over 4,000 megawatts, according to Electricity Ministry data on Friday morning, less than the grid's average generation. The cuts affected Baghdad and the southern provinces in particular.

Local channels reported that the outage was due to the cutting of a major power line - known as 400 kilovolts - between Baghdad and the southern province of Babil.

A ministry official said the cause was not immediately known, but it could be because the line was overloaded or an act of sabotage. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to report to the media.

A total shutdown can occur when the Iraqi electricity grid is operating at full capacity. Faults in the transmission network and distribution capacity also contribute to power outages. High temperatures can also affect distribution lines.

Temperatures in Baghdad and other governorates have soared to more than 48 degrees Celsius (118 Fahrenheit) in recent days. The government had declared Thursday an official holiday in Baghdad due to the scorching heat wave.   The last time an outage was seen across the country was five years ago.

The outage hit richer neighborhoods in Baghdad, where some residents usually have 24 hours of electricity. Water pumps, which depend on electricity, have stopped working in many areas, impeding access to water.

Fatih Birol, executive director of the Paris-based International Energy Agency, said the collapse of Iraq's electricity grid leaves millions without the energy they need to cope with extreme temperatures.

"We need to address system resilience in the heating world, but today we must focus on avoiding a humanitarian catastrophe amplified by unsafe energy supplies," he said in a tweet on Twitter.

Iraq-based researcher Sajjad Jiyad wrote on Twitter: "If this matter is not resolved quickly, it will have disastrous effects as everything stops working."

Power outages routinely fuel protests in Iraq. Poor government service delivery and endemic corruption drove massive anti-government demonstrations across Iraq in 2019.

Iran recently reduced its important exports of electricity to Iraq this week, which can amount to nearly a third of Iraq's supply in the peak summer months. Iraqi Electricity Minister Majid Hantoush also resigned recently, citing political and popular pressure.  https://economy-news.net/content.php?id=25564
